Somebody in the audience would provide a line, and he would start from there and write a little ditty. Silly stuff, just for fun, but he could do two or three verses that rhymed, off the top of his head. If I saw that being done today, in the era of "reality" shows, I would assume the audience member was planted and the song was written in advance. But I think Mac did it out of the clear blue.
