Dutch Wheeler
Low-bridge disasters can be painful to watch, and this particular one that ended with more than $2 million worth of damage is not an exception. The accident took place in Memphis 9/13/2020. The train in the video, which has cars marked both Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific Railway, can be seen going under a low clearance bridge and scraping the entire roof off of several train cars before it manages to stop. Since trains take a lot of time to stop completely, the painful scraping off goes for a while, totaling the brand new automobiles the train was carrying on the inside. Normally, advanced train dispatching systems are used to make sure accidents such as this one don't happen. While the reason behind it hasn't been disclosed yet, the system in question could have had wrong data about the height of the train or the clearance of the bridge. The cars that were totaled can be seen at the end of the video. The brand new Ford Explorer and Lincoln nautiluses indicate that this was probably a Ford transport train. Loophole LaRue, SASS #51438
Wait a minute..... When the video starts, there is a section of crumpled/torn roof to the right of the image, preceded by a stripped off section - as if the train had stripped a section of roof, stopped, backed up, and then decided to go forward anyway. Exactly....I can hear the train crew, after the initial impact and the first stop: "Back it up so I can see how bad it is".... "S..., we opened it up like a can opener, and took the tops off the cars".... "Might as well just keep going.....we'll tell them that we didn't hear anything or feel anything either; let the insurance company handle it" LL
Perro Del Diablo
Of course the $2,000,000 worth of damage is for the government repainting the bridge.
blazeafar SASS # 6750
This accident was not on a main line, it was in an industrial yard area on the south side of Memphis. Most likely done during switching cars around in the yard area which would explain the video showing the train stopped after after having moved away from the bridge and then continuing on. The bridge is on the northwest end of the yard and there is a auto unloading area on the southeast side.
