Moving from Romania to California to Lake of the Ozarks Missouri for Freedom

It's beginning to be a problem here in mid-Missouri. 15+ years ago families from California were moving into Benton County, Missouri. I talked to one of them and asked why they picked our county. He told me they felt like they were under communist rule in California and had no freedom. They picked our area after visiting and found American people that believed in freedom like he did. Also found the school system was what he was looking for that his children could attend. He further told me he had contacted family and friends still living in California and had convinced them to move here.

What has become the problem is many are bringing their city ideas to the country and attempting to adapt those ideas into the country. It won't work and is destroying a lot of the country style living. The biggest problem is the way neighbors use to be. We always took care of each other, gather for Christmas celebrations. Never nosy, but always caring. Now, the old folks have died out, city folks moving in and want nothing to do with each other. Speed like crazy down the gravel roads raising dust & throwing rocks everywhere. They also want to bring their city politics with them and rights to do what ever they want. Country living isn't like it use to be. Our only hope is keeping the anti-gun ideas out due to all the hunting and livelihood related to hunting and the food it provides. Also so many deer overpopulating the area, damage caused by this and diseases. Most city folks end up moving back to the city after a while. A lot of the reason is convenience like so many restaurants, stores, malls etc... Here are only a few places to eat and 2 fast food locations. Wal-Mart is it. Anything else you have to make at least a 80 mile round trip or further. Movie theater is only one which is for me a 55 mile round trip. Just not the convenience like living in the city. Slower paced.

I have visited CA several times for business and pleasure.  I think it is visually very beautiful.  It’s very green, but also has it’s wonderful deserts.

I want to be careful about insulting an entire state because I know several people on these boards live there.  Let’s just say my niece left Oklahoma and moved to CA to go to Berkeley appx 20 years ago.  She’s 40 now and she is full of contradictions and is difficult to communicate with.  Her values have changed considerably.  I’m sorry, it’s all very scary to me.

Yep, It''s all California's Fault.

It can't be the national education system that was influenced by the Soviets in the 60's and continues to brainwash our youth..

It can't be the culture of the young influenced by German communists in colleges and universities.

It can''t be the infiltration of Marxists in local governments all over the USA under the guise of racial equity.

It can't be the spineless local politicians that pander to whoever squeals loudest and have no balls to fight for what's  right.

It can't be the conservatives that rather than fight, turn their backs and hopes things go back the way they should be.

No, it's  the Californians...Oh yeah, and the New Yorkers - depending on where you live...

That's a pretty wide 'brush' you paint with.

My wife:wub: and I are very happy living Springfield.

She was born in Missouri and has deep roots here.

Her maiden name is Schofield.  Yes, she's part of that Schofield family in American history.

Many folks(us included)had to leave family behind in CA to make the move.

I think it's more likely the family will be champions for liberty. People who have lived under real socialism tend to appreciate freedom;  they probably didn't think they would have to escape from socialism here in the U.S., as well.

Unfortunately these people still tend to harbor anti-gun beliefs as they've been indoctrinated into the idea that only cops and criminals are supposed to have guns.

Yes and ask your wife what the shooting/murder rate was in Springfield 20-30 years ago compared to today. Contact the SPD gang unit and they will tell you where the gangs originally came from. Yep, California.

Yes, but it Doesn't matter if you travel North/South/East/West from Missouri you'll hit salt water eventually:lol: Missouri is surrounded by ocean. Just a big island.

you make some excellent points about where this originates and others have pointed out that its intentional and well planned - its unfortunate that california and new york  , as well as other places have embraced it to the degree they have ,  cant help pointing out the obvious ,

And that’s not a California thing. It’s an urban thing. I’ve see the SamE in Florida from immigrants from the cities of the Northeast.

I disagree. I have seen many more anti gun attitudes in immigrants from the UK than any former Soviet block country.

As a former LEO, I can tell you those gangs you blame coming from Ca, started out in Mexico and SA and were/are funded by the cartels. They entered all southern border states about the same time.

So it's all California's fault, get real......

One thing I definitely plan to do before I leave this state is test the waters elsewhere. I definitely don’t plan on moving anywhere where people look down their noses at others without knowing their character or where they actually originated.

I have lived all over this country. Ignorance and bias thrive everywhere in one form or another. The places that I have lived that accepted outsiders were The Carolinas, Pennsylvania and California. Yes, the place many of you verbally pizz all over is a hell of a lot more accepting than a whole bunch of other places in this country. Every place else I have lived I have encountered obtuse cliquish people whose biases manifested in many different forms from open hostility to shunning.
I will definitely steer clear of those areas in the future. I wouldn’t want to infect them or cause anyone heartache that an obvious leftist communist Marxist has entered their realm...even though I have been a conservative registered Republican all my adult life.

If folks are moving away from a less-than-ideal situation, I am really hoping they DO NOT move in, and vote the same way they did, from the place they left behind. I think when groups of people move into a new location, from a very publicized "bad" location, there is a tendency for the locals to be afraid that they will turn their new location into the same thing, that they moved away from

Let's be honest...some locations, have a reputation for high taxes, and high prices, and more government control, and anti-firearm liberalism. That is the perception, whether it is correct, or incorrect. The locals don't want that "cancer" to spread to where they are, and they are worried about it.

Right, wrong, or sideways, that is how the locals perceive things.

The locals are afraid of what they perceive as "negative" change.

From the little time I've lived in California, I found the people to be great -- friendly, welcoming, all the great things you'd want in a neighbor. A few miscreants, but mostly avoidable by anyone paying attention.

The land itself is stunning in its beauty and diversity.

Edit:

I've edited the original post to take out a few comments regarding California and Californians. Nothing personal, just observations of fact supported by published articles from California-based institutions, opinion from California newspapers -- that sort of thing.

You know, every place has its advantages, every place has its problems. Sometimes we have a choice on where we want to live, sometimes circumstances make the choices for us. Sometimes frustrations with one thing make us touchy about other things. No sense in getting wrapped tight around the axle over it.

True. I just get a bit testy when I feel people insinuate that just because you come from a place it makes you somehow just like everyone else that comes from that place.

When I was a kid in 7th grade we lived in Rogers Arkansas. Wonderful place to be a kid. :D

I loved that whole area around there up into Missouri. Nice folks and fantastic bass fishing. ;)

You need to get into bass fishing. It’s a whole new level of addictive behavior.

Many people have never lived in more than one state in their lifetime. I’ve only lived in 4 but met good and bad people in all of them . And while city lifestyle is not for me , I’ve even met good people from and in large cities . To me it’s socialist ideals that really are the cancer . The socialist need the numbers to spread it and cities are where the numbers are . It’s also easier to become less self reliant in today’s culture and the larger the city the more it encourages that . In many ways I miss CA , I just don’t miss the laws , cost of living or the political climate. I had a good time when I lived there , where else can you go downhill skiing in the morning and to the beach in the afternoon

Most people have never left their “little world” . When I was I kid a family moved from northern Mi to Saginaw where I grew up . I ended up becoming friends with a kid in that family. His family had kept a home in the town he was from so we used to go up there in high school allot . We were not welcomed by some of the locals and a couple of the girls families actually wouldn’t let their daughters date me or my friends. And this was only a two hour drive away. People are still very clannish . We got pulled over and searched quite a few times when we first started going up there because some of the locals were sure we were there to sell drugs . People’s perceptions of “outsiders” generally tend to be bad .

They probably figure everyone is like them :) . But allot of them just never bother to step out of their small circle of friends, some only trust family. I’ve had some people tell me they only trust “blood” . Personally I have some family I trust implicitly and unfortunately some I don’t trust at all

When I was a kid, I knew everyone within 10 miles of us.  Most were related someway.  Over the years we've been flooded with newcomers to the point that I actually know only a few.  I have one aunt left of my parent's generation.  Cousins of my generation are dying off.   I never got to know any of the second and third cousins. So we're to the point where almost everyone is a stranger.

You have to decide what you can live with or without. Sometimes life makes those decisions for you. We have a realtor in Missouri that sends us properties every week, or sooner. 40 miles to a Walmart is an inconvenience. 40 miles to an ER could be worse.

Our financial planner told us, as we began to explore Missouri, to keep heath care close, as we are getting long in the tooth. I thought he was being a wise guy, but he was just being real. Just one of many details to consider when looking for another place.

I've only lived in Illinois, as has every generation of my family. Was not uncommon to have high school sweethearts marry, and live within a mile of their folks. But things changed. I remember Democratic legislators getting awards from the NRA. But as long as Chicago has it's fangs in the State's neck, nothing will change. I hate the feeling of dread when I hear our Governor has issued a statement on something.

No place will be perfect, we have passed on places that would have been close, if I was in my 30's. But where I am now is that it is time to go.

I hear you Dom. We are from Chicago originally, moved south 35 years ago to get away from Chicago. In a few months we are heading to Heber Springs Arkansas. Thankfully while a smaller town, we have good medical, and shopping. Larger towns within a 1/2 hour and Little Rock is just an hour away. Good luck on finding your right spot.
