Work sucks!

Here we go again. Just showed up for my 2 week hitch and didn't even get to unload the truck before I was told this is the last trip we gotta make. Finish up this hitch and hit the unemployment line. You'd think I'd be used to it. 18 years in the oilfield and every election year things get tight. Normally I'm in the clear but not this time. I need a new career but really the oilfield and Marines is all I've really done. I'm to old for the Marine corps to take me back and I'm to old to start over in the oilfield when things pick back up. Most jobs in Ohio that don't require pervious industry experience don't pay worth a lick either. Ok well I'm off to indeed to see what I'm gonna be when I grow up.

You are going to have to emigrate to Canada.  Our Prime Minister is going to have a Throne Speech on Sept 24 and it will include a guaranteed income for everyone.  If it passes, no one will have to work anymore.  And, it looks like it will pass.  God help us from a socialist government.

If you're in good health, you might try one of the trades. Apprenticeships are often available for someone to learn the biz. A lot of young folks don't want to work and those with a good work record have a leg up on those who feel entitled. I would have suggested law enforcement, but the climate is pretty grim with all of the idiocy going around and would no longer endorse that.

Best of luck.

This is pretty good advice! Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning companies are almost always hiring. Electricians also. You could probably get a loan, maybe on the GI bill since you served!! Probably a year course or less or maybe an apprenticeship where they train you.

Welders are also always in demand.

A billionaire CEO lol. Nah probably not. But I'd love to open my exotic animal business up again but I have bills to pay and need insurance for the family.

Law enforcement was something I looked into after the Marines and never went through with. I'm to out of shape to be bashing protestors in the head anymore. I've considered other trades and just never moved on them. I was already making what entry level made in them or more. I also enjoyed working on the rigs but I see it's time to move on. My biggest issue is having bills based on oilfield pay. Makes it rough stepping back. I might try to contact the VA and see if I have any GI bill money left. Welding school or CDL training might be a good plan. Maybe learn a new skill and soak up some unemployment. However, I have a lead on a union maintenance job that sounds promising.

Any of these are great careers, plus don't forget gunsmithing.

Check with your local utility company.  They always need people to climb poles, repair broken pipes and sewer lines, investigate gas leaks.  Most will provide on the job training so you will have some earnings coming in.

Didn't think about that. I was certified to climb for rescue in the Marines. Definitely something to look into.

Gunsmithing? We could always use a few more ^_^

I do most of my own work but I wouldn't trust myself to work on someone else's. Honestly there's not much money in it until you're well known or make a mod/part that's the next big thing.

I was told my services were no longer needed at my last job in mid-May. I just got my CDL a big carrier paid the freight on the school.  I have to do 200 driving hours with a mentor then I will get my own company truck and be back to making enough money to keep my family going forward. The whole process start to being in your truck on your own is about 3 months. Maybe less in a COVID free world.  If you are seriously interested in getting your CDL DM me.

But the good news is, you'll be home to shoot on the weekends.:D

Sorry to hear about this. With your skills and experience you should be able to find something pretty quick.

If I were to do things over I'd look into becoming a lineman. It pays really well. Going out in inclement weather and repairing high voltage power lines sounds like similar work to the rigs. My step son is a fracker with Haliburton. He's still working, they only have a couple crews left and he has seniority, makes good money, works lots of hours to get it.

Electricians are paid pretty well and after the first couple years it gets easier when you are no longer LMOTP.

I would like to be in the quality control section of the Jameson distillery.  I am experienced in the "tasting" category.
