Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172
All the talk about the Green Movement, and the movement toward electric cars, brought to mind my question. While watching the "news" such as it is, they show all of the pre China Virus traffic on I 5 Interstate. Bumper to bumper it was. Then I thunk, I do not know if the electrics have a date stamp on the LIFE of the battery. Not charge status, but battery life. After experiencing a battery die suddenly, I wonder what would happen to traffic if they were to have one or several just stop at rush hour? Badger needs to know. Smoken D
Something I read for information about the batteries https://www.caranddriver.com/research/a31875141/electric-car-battery-life/
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172
Thank you for that information. I understand the issue a lot more now. But I am willing to stand a round at the bar, that somebody will get caught on the freeway at some future time, with a depleted ION BATTERY.. And probably at rush hour. You just know that guy Murphy is wringing his hands in glee richt now.

Probably not much different than those who attempt a 30 mile jaunt up I-5 (which should only take an hour or so) with about a quart of gas in the tank. Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474
Once battery cars reach the 60,000 mile mark, we will all start carrying Honda generators and a can of gas. Something like having a spare tire.

Linn Keller, SASS 27332, BOLD 103
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and I know just enough about electric cars and their batteries to get into trouble. I trained in the fire service and as a paramedic: we trained extensively in gasoline fire extinguishment, in extrication, in avoiding compressed gas cylinders in the pillars (actuators for seat belt tensioners), we received in-services for the sodium azide packages in air bags (slightly more toxic than sodium cyanide), we learned where and how to cut, slice, hacksaw, power saw, rip and tear to disassemble a vehicle as necessary. All that's not out the window, but I fear an entirely new training regimen is now needed to learn where not to cut with an electric car, how to assess the random damage done in a wreck to gauge where/how major power lines are compromised: even with a breaker system to electrically isolate the batteries, a wreck is so terribly random in the damage it causes, fluids -- whether rainwater, creek water or blood -- are to greater or lesser degrees, conductive, and can invade the battery compartment. (tired sigh) Greying old Dinosaur of EMS here ... now where's my T-shirt ... you know, the one that says, "The older I get, the better I was!" Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474
I keep remembering all the roads in Northern Canada with no fueling stations. Will we be able to recharge by plugging into a currant bush?

Will we be able to recharge by plugging into a currant bush? Nah, just take a small solar panel and let it charge, say, 2 - 3 weeks and you will be back on the road for a few miles. Now in the winter up there, you are SOL! (Or tow a spare set of batteries in a trailer. But that would really decrease your available distance, maybe by half (or more). (I could see some EV owners thinking this would work).
Smoken D
Why a Prius is better. Gas engine along with self charging battery. Even when the brakes are applied, which is heat, which is energy, charges the battery.
