Trigger Mike
American rifleman is on TV highlighting the Taurus judge and said it shoots long cokt and Schofield. I did an internet search and it shows that the smith and wesson governor shoots the Schofield as well. Is there any advantage of the Schofield over the long colt round? Pat Riot
Long Colt? I would prefer the .45 Colt over the Schofield on all counts. The Schofield would have less recoil. Less power.
Alpo
If the gun is strong enough, with a shorter case you can use less powder to get the same result. You could load Schofield brass with the 255 grain bullet to Colt velocities, using less powder then it would take in Colt brass.
The Bearded Wonder
The 45 Colt holds more GOEX than the Schofield.
Sedalia Dave
Factory Schofield rounds would cost significantly more than 45 Colt
LawMan Mark, SASS #57095L
No advantage. With modern powder and reloading, not much disadvantage either.
Trigger Mike
Very helpful. The governor is heavy enough that 45 long colt has little recoil already. 410 #6 shot on the other hand has some hefty recoil.
Patagonia Pete
It can also shoot 45 Cowboy Specials ... (45 acp sized case w/ 45 Colt rim) ...
Colorado Coffinmaker
By the way. There is/was no such cartridge as "45 Long Colt." That designation is a misnomer. The cartridge was/has always been 45 Colt.

FYI in 1964 the Houston Colt 45s changed their name to the Houston Astros.
