stef75 Posted July 27, 2020 Share Posted July 27, 2020 Wondering how the weight, balance and handling compares between a Uberti 1873 lever action in 44-40( or 44mag) and 357 magnum, both with 24" octagonal barrels? Might seem like a strange question but I have handled a 357 in such configuration which was all I could find and did not find it too long or heavy. Both 20” octagonal barrels. 44 spl. outside flat to flat at the muzzle. .781” 357. outside flat to flat at the muzzle. .743” 44 spl. wall thickness at the muzzle. .194 357. wall thickness at the muzzle. .184 measured at the grove inside the barrel to the outside flat all measured with a caliper Draw your own conclusions. Marshal Hangtree Posted July 27, 2020 Share Posted July 27, 2020 I'm very surprised as well. Usually the barrels come from the same blanks, then the bore and rifling are drawn. Crooked River Pete, SASS 43485 Posted July 27, 2020 Share Posted July 27, 2020 Well if we take that .781 across flats for that .44, subtract the .430 bore dia that leaves us .351 divide by two we have .1755 wall thickness. .743 minus the .357 bore dia =.386 divide x 2 = .193 wall thickness.
