DocDisaster # 45431
I am looking for some input on sights for my Marlin 1895 in 45-70. I want to be able to shoot out to 800 yards or so, and want something adjustable for this but want to stay PERIOD to the 1895, not wanting a scope. So far I have looked at the -Smith semi buckhorn ladder sight- didnt seem fitting for the lever action - Lyman tang sight - not sure how easily it adjusts for distance - Williams reciever mount peep - too futuristic looking - Skinner peep - no adjustment Please give me some input, pros, cons, experience you have had. Turquoise Bill, SASS #39118
Marbles tang sight, you'll have to drill a second hole in the receiver tang, I'll done it to mine and for a few other cowboys, no big deal. Then for the front sight Lyman peep sight with interchangeable inserts. Check the height of the existing front sight, I forget which height I ordered. All of the sights are available from Midway USA. Snakebite
Let me know how that gun works out for you at 800 yds. 20 twist and barrel length could be interesting. I just have a Lyman Tang sight on mine, and generally use it like an express rifle. Snakebite
Three Foot Johnson
I've got a Marbles tang sight on a 336CB .38-55, but I'm setting up an 1895CB for a long range side match rifle. I've got a spare Lee Shaver bubble front globe, and am going to give MVA a call tomorrow - they're only an hour away from me, and only 15 minutes up the Interstate from next weekend's Cowboy shoot. I'm thinking a #101 mid-range Soule, or a #130 or #132 vernier.
Major Crimes
I have a Lee Shaver Soule on order for my Pedersoli 1886. I doubt I will be shooting to 800 with it, I will leave that for the Sharps. http://stores.leeshavergunsmithing.com/lever-action-rifles-mid-range-soule/

Hoss
At 800 yds you are going to need more than a buckhorn or ladder. Even a Lyman tang likely not enough. You will need a precision vernier-Soule sight with a globe front sight. Even then, 800 yds out of a 95 is asking a lot. Doable, probably, but a challenge for sure. DocDisaster # 45431
Going to have a 800 yard range, doesn't mean I'll always be shooting out that far though, but a challenge is always fun. Want to use the rifle for side matches and maybe some hunting. But want to stay period for SASS use. I have a 32" Buffalo Classic for the distance stuff. Those conditions rule out the last two choices on your list. Neither one is legal for SASS use. REF: SHB pp. 32 &

Three Foot Johnson
I talked to MVA this morning, and they said the #104 short Soule will be good to 400 yards, give or take, but to get to 500 and beyond will require the #101 mid-range. For my intended use, a Soule probably isn't necessary over a standard vernier sight, but what the hey. Give 'em a call, they're all very knowledgeable about what you'll need for your anticipated application. https://montanavintagearms.com/product/104-schuetzen/ https://montanavintagearms.com/product/101-mid-range/ https://montanavintagearms.com/product/130-vernier-tang-sight/ https://montanavintagearms.com/product/132-vernier-tang-sight/

John Boy
Doc, put a mid range soule vernier tang sight on the rifle with a Hadley cup. Trust me, you will be dissatisfied with a Marbles sight ... https://montanavintagearms.com/product/101-mid-range/
