40 rods = 220 yards, 660 feet 1/8 mile, 10chains, 1 furlong.

See, some of us still know these things...and use it to our advantage.  :D

I did think you would probably appreciate this.

And dog, and people, and scorpions!

(I have a UV flashlight that I use at night when I walk Custer to avoid the scorpions!)

So does rat and mouse urine, even all urine.

But that fact is not useless for mice and rats, the glow shows where to set traps across the trails.

Useless unless you are in Switzerland. You can’t have just one hamster for a pet.

Switzerland has some of the most animal-friendly laws on the books. For example, people must take classes before they can bring a dog home, and cat owners who only have one feline friend in their household must let them outdoors or provide a window with a view of other cats. Ensuring that other social animals have companionship is also important to the Swiss — so much so that owners of animals such as goldfish and guinea pigs are prohibited by law from keeping only one. For those who take home two guinea pigs at the same time and don't want to adopt a second furry friend if one dies before the other, Switzerland has developed a cottage industry to keep people from being in violation of the law. This comes in the form of guinea pig rental services that offer short-term companions for a person's elderly furry friend. Since 2008, Sweden has enacted similar laws and other European countries have strengthened their own animal protection legislation.

Pearl Harbor was 1941, so one year later would be 1942.

A Lieutenant outranks a Sergeant Major.  A Major outranks a Lieutenant.   But, a Lieutenant General outranks a Major General.   That's because Major Generals were originally called Sergeant Major General.

An elephant footprint is approximately 18 inches to 20 inches in both length and width.

I believe, simply because it makes sense, that it one time ranks were

Sergeant major Captain

Lieutenant captain

Captain

Sergeant major colonel

Lieutenant colonel

Colonel

Sergeant Major General

Lieutenant General

General

They dropped the captain from the first two ranks, dropped the sergeant and colonel from the fourth rank, and dropped the sergeant from the seventh rank.

These ranks now became

Sergeant major

Lieutenant

Captain

Major

Lieutenant colonel

Colonel

Major General

Lieutenant General

General

I certainly do not know this to be true, so I am not claiming it to be fact.

But I believe it.

Great googlie mooglies, I'm nearly ten months older that Howdy Doody.  And I'm pretty sure that at one time I had a lot more freckles.

Extract from a WW II era US Navy Pilots Survival Manual.

We had a manual when I was growing up.

If marooned in the Arctic and harvesting a Polar Bear for food:

DO NOT eat the Polar Bear’s liver it is toxic.

Polar Bear Liver contains too much iron for safe consumption

Hey,

Howdy Doody is 2 years older than me, to the day, Dec. 7, 1944.
I had a Howdy Doody Marionette as a kid.

How about that! :D

Me too.  I also had a Marilynn Monroe string puppet, too.  Hence the smile on Howdy’s face.  (That’s what my dad said anyway.)

Smirnoff vodka is made from corn.

I was surprised when I learned that vodka doesn't have to be made from a particular ingredient.  I think he said all that was required is that it be brewed within the correct proof range.  The same is true for moonshine and probably other liquors.  Vodka is one of the highest which is why it's got such a clean taste.

Most historians agree that the westernmost Civil War battle took place in 1862 at Picacho Pass, 50 miles northwest of Tucson.

I pointed this out to a lady from back east as we were on final approach into Phoenix, as she looked at Picacho Peak directly below us and simply said, why didn't they just go have a beer instead?

And I just love this  one.....

According to readings by the National Geodetic Survey, the Four Corners marker showing the intersection of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah is in the wrong location. ... The accurate location would be downhill to the east of U.S. 160 in Colorado and northeast of the San Juan River as it flows into New Mexico.

The uranium bomb, Little Boy, nuclear artillery, reached critical mass before optimal design. Did the job but it was a premature eruption.

Detonated at 2000 - 2500 ft above the earth's surface as a result. Still made one hell of a mess.
