Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967
.308 Garand question: Why? Not a criticism at all; just wondering why? What's the appeal? Are there any advantages over the venerable aught six...?
Pat Riot
I converted mine because 30.06 was costing me 40-50 cents a round back in the 90’s and .308 surplus could be had for 15-25 cents a round depending on where it was made. Right after I converted it cheap .308 got scarce. Go figure... Another bonus is .308 150 grain rounds are loaded more consistently in pressure than lots of factory 30.06 loads. Finding Garand friendly 30.06 can be problematic. Not so much with .308. I would like to use some .308 or 30.06 on auto communista and iPhone’s keyboard sensitivity... I'm curios about converting M1 Garands from .30-06 to .308... the M1A started life as a .308.
Johnson County Mike
Hi, I have several Garands that I have purchased from the CMP and one is a .308. Originally .308 Garands were made for the Navy. Mine is barreled by the CMP in one of their "Specials". It shoots good and I think the main reason is cheaper ammunition. Some say the recoil is lighter. You use the same clips and parts except the barrel. If you don't know about the CMP here's an article I wrote for the "Survival Blog" in 2014, https://survivalblog.com/the-cmp-americas-civilian-armory-by-uncle-mike/ . Check out the CMP, it's your last chance to get a real Garand. It's open only to US citizens and once you qualify they FedEx the rifle to your home, regards, Mike

Cheatin Charlie
Also how long has it been since 30-06 NM ammo was made? The last article I read is that 308 NM ammo was more accurate than 30-06 NM.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172
I must confess, I have never fired .308 ammunition in any kind of rifle, and truth be known only rumor as to the of the merit of the statement. From, what I have heard is that the .308 is more accurate and prefered for distance targets over the -06. That said, the -06 has a rainbow trajectory and the .308 has a flatter trajectory, however I still I prefer the Garand in .30-06. But then everybody knows that Badger is an old fossil, so be it. The up side is that virtual firearms have a different requirement than hard furniture.
Pat Riot
I laugh when people look down their nose at .308 yet shoot 30.06 loaded almost exactly to the same ballistics...can you say 150 grain mil-spec?

I am not looking down my knose at the .308, Pat. I just grew up with the -06 and S/SGT Buxton taught me to love my M1.
Trailrider #896
Aside from the theoretical advantages of one cartridge over the other, the main reason for converting an M-1 to 7.62 NATO would be compatibility with M-14/M-1A's, or if you had other rifles in .308 Winchester and didn't want to chance mixing up ammo between rifles. Some of the Navy conversions were done by driving a filler block into the chamber to take up the headspace. This was only a so-so expedient as some of the block were know to have come loose when the fired round was extracted!
Pat Riot
My Garand has a proper .308 block. It was funny the first time I took it out I was baffled by it. “What’s this thing going on here?”... Duh! The guy that did the barrel work didn’t tell me about it.
