Nimble Fingers SASS# 25439 Posted July 23, 2020 Share Posted July 23, 2020 I use mostly Colts in .44 special, 2 New Frontiers, and the Winchester/Colt originally in .44/40, converted to .44 special. I started with a Ruger Vaquero, in .44 mag with one of the New Frontier and a Winchester 94 in .44 mag. I since have a few 92’s, Winchester and Browning, in .44 mag. I am not fast and frankly it has been about 10 years since I have shot. I never competed, just had fun, so all the firearms I used performed to my satisfaction using .44 mag firearms shooting .44 special. but if you want to compete, then .38 special is the caliber you should go with. I only say this to inform you as it appears you are starting out. But if you are like me and like big calibers go for it. Oh I have always fired smokeless although I have thought of getting black powder cartridges to shoot. hope this helps you. Best thing is to enjoy what you shoot. Or a Colt with a short barrel Or a Colt with a long barrel And of course you can run .44 Special in any revolver chambered for .44 Magnum, such as a Great Western. Or an Uberti. Kirk James Posted July 24, 2020 Share Posted July 24, 2020 You can use your SAA 44 specials and your 44 mag Browning 92. In your Browning 92 you can use 44 Mag or 44 special. Use light loads to be friendly on your clubs steel. Your Colt Frontiers will work great. Don't worry about the 38 specials, just shoot and have fun. I like .44 because I am not a competitor, but I was suggesting to the post originator that if he was starting and wanted to be a serious participant he should consider switching to .38. The only issue I have found with shooting.44 spcls in a .44 mag rifle is the cartridges overall length, sometimes when using reloads the length is shorter and cause feeding issues. Have fun. bgavin Posted July 24, 2020 Share Posted July 24, 2020 OP, Guns chambered for 44 Magnum have three options: • 44 Mag • 44 Special • 44 Russian The respective maximum cartridge overall length is: • 1.610" 44 Mag • 1.615" 44 SP • 1.430" 44 Russian Speer #15 shows the 44 Special COAL longer than 44 Magnum. I have no idea why, as the 44 Special case trim length is shorter than 44 Magnum. • 1.275" 44 Mag • 1.160" 44 SP • 0.960" 44 Russian If you have an 186x or 187x toggle-link rifle, The Smith Shop offers a specialized carrier.
