If you encounter a unit you can’t identify, fire one round over their heads so it won’t hit anyone.

If the response is a fusillade of rapid, precise rifle fire, they’re British.

If the response is a s**tstorm of machine-gun fire, they’re German.

If they throw down their arms and surrender, they’re Italian.

And if nothing happens for five minutes and then your position is obliterated by support artillery or an airstrike, they’re American.

And if you hear "Ayo Gurkhali"* you shot at some Gurkhas

*Ayo Gurhali translated into English usually means 'Here come the Gurkhas' , although I have also read it translated as 'The Gurkhas are upon you'

According to my Dad, Aussies like nothing better than beer and mortars.

There was a company of Australians right next to his company area in Viet Nam.  He said the first thing they did when they moved in was start digging mortar pits.  Apparently, they worked all day and stayed up all night drinking beer and taking fire missions.

I thought that was Gurkhali for, "You're soooo screwed!":D

Apparently, that's what the Argentinians, thought too.

They retreated from the Gurkhas and kept doing so until they had a chance to surrender to the Scots.

From a friend in the reserves who got called up in Desert Strom 1, it might be more than 5 minutes...

The ship had been under fire for "some time." Nothing was making a hit but it was getting "annoying."

So finally the ship sending inbound was targeted. Radar showed the boat, the strike, then disturbed water, then nothing. Rescue party sent out to look for survivors, nothing found.

Not really a good strategy... Definitely bad tactics.

Who doesn’t like chucking bombs down tubes?

The only down side is when you forget to take the tinnies you hid from the officers out first:blush:

Well, what about the French?  Maybe they’ll send over a cutie with a nice bottle of red wine to negotiate?

Based on what you told us in the past, if it's hydraulics aussies you'd suddenly discover your gear missing.

Lots of threats, a volley in the wrong direction and then they become your allies!

Daddy said that his Aussie neighbors did seem to enjoy themselves.

They were under random harassment fire nightly and, occasionally, a round would fall in the Australian company area.  When that happened, he said that they didn't seem to appreciate that much, would take it personally and then get serious about working those mortar tubes.
