Cholla
I have read about the WWII Code Talkers. I was recently told Native American sign talkers were used during WWI, using sign language. Has anyone read anything about this? All I can find is verbal communication, not hand motion for code talkers.
Utah Bob #35998
The army used native code talkers in WW1. The radios were short range and crude. Most communication was by field phone in the trenches. Each side would tap into the enemy wires to listen in. So they recruited Choctaw’s from Oklahoma and it worked well. Not many Choctaw’s in Germany. I have never heard of sign language code talkers. Seems kind of short range and pointless.
Sedalia Dave
Not sure how that would work. Personally I think somebody confused code with sign.
Utah Bob #35998
Like the Navajo code talkers, the Choctaw had to devise phrases for military terms that had no equivalent translation. Artillery was Big Gun. A documentary was made in 2010.
