This sounds like a lot of fidgeting by the County Supervisors.
 

If the Supervisors seriously but foolishly, decide to change the name of John Wayne Airport by vote in their hidey-hole, I believe it will be a death sentence for the Supervisors’ tiny little political careers.

 

Any such decision should be by “regular election” (a November vote; not a special election), stemming from a ballot initiative, which would require confirmation from a large number of signatures of the County Citizenry.  THEN, placed up for vote in a regular, November election.  The Supervisors would be foolish to do it any other way.

I think this sums up a lot of the political feelings right now.

 

“We can remember the good things that John Wayne did for this nation and Orange County,” read the OC GOP statement by Chairman Fred Whitaker. “We can and do condemn what he said in that 1971 magazine interview. So, we can also learn from his imperfections. Just like we’ve learned from and about the flaws of many leaders like JFK, FDR, and so on. Iconography is about enshrining the larger ideals of good from their lives, not the flaws. Those goals are best served by keeping our history in front of us, not by destroying it to serve the radicalism and frenzy of the present moment. We owe that, at the very least, to the Americans who will come long after we are gone."

Notice no one in the D party discusses Robert Byrd and he gets a pass for being a West Virginia KKK clan leader. 

They all forgive him and the leftist media waxes eloquently about that piece of excrement. 
 

No one discusses Biden’s use of the “N” word in the 1970’s when talking on a panel with Southern Senators. 
 

No one discusses that all these cities with self described “systemic racism” have been run by a certain party for decades. 
 

No one discusses the lack of action on behalf of certain minorities by all the head party members mentioned with 50 - 70 years as politicians under their belts so that they could keep an entire ethnic group under their control and voting for them. 
 

But, find one example of a conservative making a statement many years ago and their is no forgiveness and utter vitriol for them.

The statement by John Wayne that is being vilified and derided is taken out of context!!

 

 I recall a sermon I heard years ago about half truths and taking things out of context. The minister took three statements from the bible out of context, presented them without contextual explanation and came up with... “ Whatever thou doest, doest thou quickly,” “Judas went out and hanged himself!” “Go ye and do likewise!”

 

So Jesus not only condoned suicide, he wanted people to hurry and kill themselves?!?!?

At last, some good news. 

You know, human beings are not perfect, regardless of what anyone says about themselves, or their particular group.  Everyone has things they say, or do, that isn't perfect, or right.  Take for instance Thomas Jefferson, one of the major authors of the Declaration of Independence.  He wrote "all men are created equal", yet he owned slaves.  Or, John Wayne, who made unfortunate statements, taken out of context, that in hindsight, should not have been said.  Yet, in Jefferson's case, and in Wayne's case, and in deed in many of the human beings that made history, what they stood for, what they wrote, even if they were imperfect human beings, are never-the-less things that we ought to all aspire to.  The humans are imperfect, and flawed, but the words, and what they stood for are not.  They are the ideals that we all should strive, and aspire to achieve.  So, use some common sense, and don't "throw the baby out with the bathwater".  And also, we all are too ready to judge by today's standards, and norms, and mindset, but back in their day, they had different standards, norms, and mindsets.  It's pretty easy to look back, and point out their hypocrisy, and forget the beautiful, and almost scriptural words they wrote.  Let's don't hide our history, by putting it out of sight, and out of mind.  Let's don't pretend it did not happen. Let's wade out to meet it, and be honest about it.  Our history is not perfect, nor were and are the humans that founded and shaped our country.  Let's keep the monuments, and teach our children what these people did incorrectly, but also balance it out by teaching them the good, and inspiring things they did, and stood for. 

Hiding our history, or pretending it did not happen, or changing it to sugar-coat what actually happened, is simply dishonest, and just another form of lying...to ourselves, and to our children, and grandchildren. 

Let's keep aspiring to the sacred words that said...."we hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal...that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights...that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".  The humans that conceived and wrote these words, and words like this, are imperfect, and flawed, and hypocrites.  But, the words, and the ideas these words convey, are not!!!

Seriously strong words worthy of praise and repetition.
