Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967
So... how many of y'all knew that we once actually had a war (sorta) with France? Known as The Quasi-war, it was relatively short - July 1798 through September 1800, and was mostly fought at sea. It seems that after the French Monarchy was abolished, they (the French) took exception to the United States' deciding that money (and a lot of it!) that we'd borrowed from said Monarchy did not have to be repaid to the new French government. Oh, and there were a few other relatively minor issues... On balance, the United States also took exception to the French capturing over 2,000 American merchant ships! Tom Bullweed
There was another war w/ France about 45 years earlier that greatly impacted the growth of our settlements for the rest of the 18th century.
Pat Riot
That’s okay. They still helped us with those scoundrels, the Brits. I still think it’s hilarious that my DNA is well past 50% British.
