Marshal Jennison
Hi there: I'm hoping some of you can share any methods you have in caring and protection of the original hard rubber butt plates on your 1897 shotguns (short of covering them with leather). I was thinking of cleaning mine with warm water and a spot of Dawn, letting it dry thoroughly, then adding a coat of Renaissance wax. I don't want to do that however, if it's detrimental ; I can't find much on the internet (except for how to darken old rubber pens...). If you've got some tried and true methods, please, do tell. Thanks, Marshall Jennison.
The Original Lumpy Gritz
Warm soapy water and clean with a toothbrush. Rub in a coat of Tru-oil and wipe down with clean towel. Let sit overnight and reinstall. OLG
Brazos John
Just thinking.... If you wax it, won't it have more of a chance of sliding off your shoulder? Maybe not, but somebody here in a forum mentioned about sticking a piece of leather to their butt plate, I guess to help it stay put. Just a thought.... Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Not much you can do but clean it, as above. The hard plastic/bakelite/gutta percha has no preservative. They can be replaced with modern reproduction pieces if you want to store away an original. I sure would not wax them with any type of wax - too slippery to shoot fast. Good luck, GJ
