Any fans of Broadway musicals in the Saloon?  We watched it last night on Disney+ and loved it!

After what the original cast did to VP Mike Pence and his wife when they went to see it  I would never watch this!

I understand if musical theater isn’t your cup of tea, but I’m curious about your history comment.

The play portrays Hamilton as a complex man. A few flaws, but overall a great man who is one of the most underrepresented founding statesmen of America.

I’m unimpressed.

Imho Hamilton would have made the Federal Government all powerful had he lived.  The way he tried to rig the duel shows a lot about his character.

Burr should have been given an award for killing him.

Hamilton was a socialist before socialism had a name!!

Besides, all of the “Cultural Misappropriation” makes this a little dissonant.

We are talking about the same Alexander Hamilton how wrote the vast majority of the Federalist Papers, right? You know, the ones Constitutional scholars often reference, including SCOTUS and most conservatives, in determining what the founders meant? That guy, right?

I'm not necessarily a fan of Hamilton, but Burr... Aaron Burr... The guy that was charged with Treason was far, far worse. Just think Hamilton and Jefferson were as close to mortal enemies as could be found among the founding fathers, yet Hamilton fought for Jefferson to gain the Presidency over Burr...

Nope, I didn't watch the show. I was busy otherwise. Mrs. Doc enjoyed it though.

Hamilton backing Jefferson was his considered choice of the lesser of two evils!  Hamilton had a personal grudge with Burr. Hamilton was a cheat! As mentioned elsewhere, he tried to rig the duel with Burr.  If you notice, much of what was written in the Federalist Papers by Hamilton is ignored in favor of the views of other writers.

In my opinion it is great that the musical, which was inspired by the biography written by R. Chernow (who recently wrote a fine bio of Grant) rekindled a huge interest in Hamilton, and casts him in a positive light. Millions of people, including lots of young people, who never heard of him or his role in history learned a lot of positive American history. So what about all the artistic license? That's what makes a successful show.

The stage musical had the collateral effect of eliminating from the consideration of the Obama administration of removing Hamilton from the $50 bill!

But hey, who can argue with defenders of Aaron Burr, the Man Without a Country?

Aaron Burr was not a good person.  There are probably not enough words to describe his faults.

But Hamilton was not a friend of individual liberty and was duplicitous when it came to States Rights.

My point exactly regarding Jefferson and Burr. Hamilton siding with Jefferson speaks volumes.

I guess you didn’t take the same political science and Constitutional Law classes I did. Jay only wrote five, and while Madison’s are studied, Hamilton’s receive significant attention.

MP and his missus were in the audience... after the show, with the entire cast on stage, one of the major players basically lectured the Vice President (elect) about the incoming administration not properly representing the entire population.

Basically, it could be looked upon as a seed that grew into today's issues.  It was an attitude that has certainly been nurtured!   :(

Vice President Pence had taken his wife to see the play Hamilton where he was booed and humiliated before and during the play.

At a performance of the Broadway smash Hamilton, Pence was booed (with some cheers mixed in) before the show started. While the cast performed the hip-hop musical about the Founding Fathers, debate raged on the internet about the etiquette behind booing the vice president-elect.

At the end of the show, star Brandon Victor Dixon, the actor who plays Vice President Aaron Burr, read a statement to the vice president-elect, thanking him for attending, but noting “we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us.”

According to New York Times reporter Patrick Healy, the statement was written by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who penned it upon hearing that Pence would be attending Friday night’s performance.

Healy tweeted that Pence was seen walking out during Dixon’s statement, although Dixon is heard asking the vice president-elect to stay. It’s unclear if the vice president-elect heard the statement.

I always enjoy a good musical, film or stage; I had season tickets for many years to a summer series in the Bay Area.  That said, I'll probably see "Hamilton" someday... when I can see it for free.

A wayward thought, though - I'm reading all sorts of stuff these days about how horrid it is for actors to portray people of another ethnicity.  Even voices in cartoons!  Heck - even PBS's Rick Bayless was accused of "cultural appropriation" for his Mexico: One Plate At a Time show.   Soooo.... how does Hamilton get an exemption?

Mind you, I don't care who plays what - it's all pretend!   -_-

But some folk do.

We watched it all the way down here on Disney+ too.

I know nothing about Hamilton (the man) or the history around him but enjoyed it as a show.

My daughter is an absolute Broadway buff and probably knows more about Hamilton and his history than she does about our current Prime Minister:D

Ever hear of the Triangular Trade? One destination in the route was the Caribbean, where Alexander Hamilton clerked for a trading company.

That puts him solidly in history as being in the business of the slave trade. Maybe in the new U.S. he wasn't a slave owner, but he was sure as hell a slave trader.

Wonder why Hamilton hasn't been boycotted?

Going by the recent protests, there is no, ‘Yeah, but . . . ‘ when it comes to being associated with slavery.

I didn’t say, ‘boycott Hamilton,’ I said, ‘boycott Hamilton.’ There’s a difference.

I enjoyed it on Disney +, very grateful for the subtitles.

And Hamilton is on the $10 bill.  Andrew Jackson is the $20, Jefferson the $2, Grant is the $50, and Franklin is on the $100.  (It’s all about the Benjamins, you know.). Some of you need to use cash more than credit cards!  ;)

A poor rigging job as he died of his wound.

He was using his brother - in -law's pistols, which had hidden set triggers.  He was trying to set the trigger on his pistol and accidentally discharged it into the ground.  Burr did not know about the trigger, and so was able to fire his shot accurately.

Those pistols were meant to be killing machines, they were rifled and had good sights (for the time) as well as the set triggers.

Had Hamilton not bungled, he certainly would have killed Burr.

Burr was a colossal piece of crud!! He too was a person not good for the country!

Poetic justice would have been for them to kill each other.  The nation would have been better for it!!!
