Decisions...Decisions...Decisions?

Recommended Posts

Interested in purchasing a firearm that will shoot 45 cal and .410.

Based on what I have seen, some of the options are:

RUGER REDHAWK

S&W GOVERNOR

PEDERSOLI HOWDAH

Which one would be the best value, or are there other options?

What makes you think the Redhawk will shoot .410s?  The cylinder on the gun in the photo is not near long enough.  The other gun that started the whole .45/.410 thing is the Taurus Judge.

My fault.

Was looking at 45acp/45colt then switched to 410.

Got confused.

Didn’t Taurus used to make a revolver called The Judge?

Still do. It's one of the most popular guns they ever made. For the life of me I can't figure out why.  If I was looking for something like FKCCG is, I'd go for the Howda, just to be different.

The Judge is a great gun to carry in a boat and shoot snakes before they can climb in with you. I know several people that own one just for that.

Better before they climb in than after! :P

Shoot before it gets into boat...Hole in bottom of boat means you are joining the snake...Just a thought....

My Bond derringer is marked for 45 colt and 410 in a 2-1/2 barrel.
410 is painful to say the least, when it goes off.
Don’t know what I was thinking when I got it.

You shouldn't 2nd guess yourself about buying it.

We just want to know what you were thinking when you popped off that .410 shell in it?

Leading up to it process was sort of.....

1: sight picture (such as they are)

2: firm repeatable grip

3: confident trigger squeeze, only pad of finger tip on the trigger

4: don’t anticipate flinching

Afterwards....

1: WOW that was loud

2: WOW that kicks a lot!!!

3: WOW will my hand ever return to normal?

4: I wonder if I can get my buddies to try this?:P

Regards

Hornady made a load called.410 Handgun. Haven’t seen it for a while. I shot a couple out of my American Derringer.45/.410 to check the patterning at 5’. Recoil wasn’t too bad, considering it’s intended purpose, although it was pleasant compared to full power.45 Colt loads...:o

Here is what I've uncovered so far.

  • Although the Pedersoli Howdah is a novel looking firearm, at $1,300.00, my gold could be spent on another completely different firearm I would rather have. I do like the option of loading a .410 buckshot in the first chamber to ward off the perpetrator, and a .45 cal in the second chamber for distance!
  • I will admit that although my wife likes her Taurus .38 cal for concealed carry, the S&W Governor, as Rye stated, also Chambers 45acp. The look of the revolver is better, along with name recognition.

  • Several of the responses have raised the issue of recoil. My question is whether the recoil from the 45 Colt, 45 acp or 410 is the worse? Also, barrel length, as to which is preferred? Does the Governor come with a longer barrel?
  • The price difference isn't significant for the additional features the S&W offers, which is around $700 as compared to the Taurus at $440, depending on where you shop..

Currently leaning towards the Governor; however, open to more input, as I value everyone's expertise and experience in this area.

Recoil is subjective.

With the Taurus Judge - I didn't find the recoil of factory 2 1/2" .410-bore to be any worse than factory .45 Colt loads, but I can't remember which factory loads I had.

Used the 2 1/2" #8 shot to take out some roosters that were causing a problem.

You really need to pattern one with the shot you're using if you go with one.
