Half a case of real BP. Then top off with fine walnut mediaLevel with the top of the case.  Cap with a .458 round ball seated just past the mid point of the ball.

I load a home cast Lee RNFP over 12.5 grains of Trailboss. No recoil in my Sharps. Clangs a target at 300 yards.

There are mild loads using Unique.
Before I relegated my IAB to wall hanger duty (when I read a standard load blew the bottom out of a man's chamber I considered this one's several sins and hung it up forever) -- I loaded Unique for it -- stuffed in toilet paper to hold that little bitty charge of powder on the primer.
Three shots and it looked like I was launching chickens out the bore.
I didn't shoot any more toilet paper loads, cleanup is too tedious!
(*edit to clarify*) -- That's clean up shredded toilet paper from the grass, not clean the bore!

Would you have any access to the Summer 1996 issue of  Blackpowder Hunting which has a detailed article by Mike Fargas called " Trapdoors and Bushy Tails" in which he gives details of working up a .45-70 load light enough for squirrels.

Maybe you could dig around online and find it?

I should have offered more background.  Most of my 45-70 experience is with modern lever actions in 20 or 24” barrels.  Shooting factory hunting loads or buffalo bore loads.  The opportunity presented itself to trade for a 7” handgun.  Hoping to come up with a light load that will not scare her off.  This rules out BP as she will not tolerate the aroma.  It sounds like we can load it light enough to work.

Thank you

385 GR. CAST LFPLead Flat Point

300 GR. CAST LFPLead Flat Point

Trail Boss

2.465"

Starting

14.0 grain

1199 fps

19400 cup

These are from the ADI load manual but are for a longer barrel (24") so the velocities will be lower, its TB so fast burning but I dont know if the 7" barrel will burn it all, you would need to check as you go.

Never used Trail Boss. Sedalia's recipe sounds like a good one. The only times I used a filler was in mouse loads for my derringer with BP. I used cornmeal, but lots of stuff will work. That's one of the beauties of the REAL BP is you almost have to try to have a major f.........foul up.

For certain. The ONLY mistake is an air pocket.
