Swedes might be turnips or rutabagas.

vegetable extract might be

Though some suggest vegemite or marmite.

No doubt that was the opinion of many who tried it.

To at least some degree rationing in England lasted until 1954: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rationing_in_the_United_Kingdom#Post-Second_World_War_1945-1954

 

And I've come across references to black market/smuggling among those on the US to England or Canada to England convoys, including of all things, birdseed for parakeets and other pet birds.
