Finish used on IAC M1897 Wood.

Just wondering if anyone has refinished the wood on a later (2009) IAC model 1897 shotgun.  If so, what did you use to remove the existing finish?  If some kind of poly, I’ll have to use a more invasive stripping method which I’d rather avoid.  I’m hoping the Chinese used shellac or lacquer...

Thanks, Marshal Jennison

Be careful removing and reinstalling those screws. Use proper screwdrivers.

It's spray polyurethane varnish.   Regular stripper will pull it quickly.  Easier than Uberti's finish!

The older "red paint" used on many Norinco and early IAC 97s is a little harder to get completely off, and then you are left with a white low grain wood that is VERY hard to make look like conventional gun stocks.  Another reason to stay away from those early models.  Or replace with walnut stocks from Boyds!

Good luck, GJ
