The singer was best known for performing hits such as We'll Meet Again to troops on the front line in countries including India and Egypt.

Her family said they were "deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain's best-loved entertainers".

In a statement, they confirmed she died on Thursday morning surrounded by her close relatives.

Information on a memorial will be announced at a later date.

Sorry to learn this.

As my wife and I are service brats, children of WWII vets, we grew up hearing her music in the messes and at home.

Later, when I joined the Governor Generals Foot Guards, there were still a lot of vets around, in the mess at the Cartier Square Drill Hall.

I did a lot of the courting of my wife in Foot Guards and Cameron Highlanders messes, dancing to the music from Vera Lynn's era.

We still enjoy her music.

Amazing how music not only survives a conflict, but flourishes and inspires!!
