Subdeacon Joe
Whoever owns the album seems to have gleaned a good portion, if not all, of them from US Navy archives. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmDMt7DD https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2020/06/06/d-day-photos-remembrance/ One thing that struck me as I was going through these is that the people going to the fountain in the town square to get water likely weren't doing it because the water to their homes had been cut off because of damage to the water system, but because that fountain was the town water system. Church Key, SASS # 33713
This is OT as far as the photos. I just reviewed a documentary of the HMS Warspite. It was a British battleship built in 1912. It fought in WWI & II. At Normandy, It expended all of its 15" shells on the first day, went back to England, reloaded and then went back and expended all of its new shells on day 2. Then went back to England for new barrels as they were completely worn out. England certainly got their measure of service from this ship.
Utah Bob #35998
Pretty good collection. Some are pre Invasion and some are post D Day. But all are related to the effort.
Warden Callaway
EPA wouldn't allow it today.
Subdeacon Joe
Yep. That's why I put Normandy Invasion rather than D-Day in the subject line.
Warden Callaway
What the pictures don't show is the horrific carnage on both sides and civilian population from the beach lending through the plush inland.
Dutch Nichols, SASS #6461
Little known fact virtually all of the US landing photos were lost in route back to the brass on board ships!! Seems they were all collected and in same bag that was washed overboard or some such. There are a few taken by engineers that survived. Story has it due to the mass casualties they didn't want the public to ever see them!?

That’s because they’ official photos. But a lot of the graphic correspondent’s pics never made it past the censors also.

A lot of the equipment carried both by correspondents and combat cameramen was damaged on the beach or went into the drink. The famous Robert Capa only had a handful of surviving pics. They went into Life magazine.
Dutch Nichols, SASS #6461
Bob quite right he carried his back to the ship himself, and was later told only 11 photos came out and that the rest were over developed and blurred! Go Figure!!
