Okay now that we’ve blasted some Duke films

Recommended Posts

Let’s list you rate as the great ones.

And I suspect more than a few will make both lists. :P

Red River;  I saw it at a drive-in when it was new and I was 5 years old I and had nightmares about stampedes for years.

The Quiet Man;  maybe because I'm Irish, mostly.  Or maybe because of Victor McLaglen and Maureen O'Hara and the rest of that cast.  It never gets  old.

True Grit; it was filmed in Colorado (my natal state) and Duke finally got his Oscar.

The Comancheros; JW finally acted his age rather than being the love interest, the Elmer Bernstein soundtrack is inspired, and I don't care about the period incorrect guns.

No arguments about McClintock, Big Jake, but the Shootist is hard to watch, knowing what is coming.

I’ll throw in a curveball. I’ve loved North to Alaska since I was a kid.

Round out my top five with:

The Shootist

El Dorado

Big Jake

Hondo

Edit: I think I need to add The Cowboys, just because. But boy, I still don't like Bruce Dern.

The Shootist.

Only one of his movies that made my eyes water.

Glad he got an Academy Award, but it should have been for this one. All his other movies were variations on a successful formula. This one was personal, and it showed in his performance.

Maybe it’s my age and personal circumstances that enhances its effect on me, but this one also grabbed me from when it was first released way back when.

I liked a lot of his movies and watch them all the time.

I would rate the Shootist as one of the best.

Mostly I liked the ending and how he talked about the person that could not shoot being the one that would do him in.

The other statement that stood out to me was if you need to shoot, don't hesitate, just do it.

He got shot in the back and Ron Howard shot the bartender, realized what he did, threw the gun and walked out and said nothing.

John Wayne lived just long enough to see what happened, and shook his head in approval.

I saw it when I was a freshman in High school if i remember correctly.

My favorite 5 (five) John Wayne Western movies are the following

Stagecoach  (1939)

Red River  (1948)

Hondo  (1953)

The Searchers (1956)

The Shootist  (1976)

(I must say that Harry Morgan, as Marshall Thibido in “The Shootist,” dragged the movie down.  His acting abilities were always questionable, and in this case, among his worst......stilted and wooden.....he was just painfully reading his lines.)

Cat Brules

I have liked Harry Morgan in different things I have seen, But I will agree with this and part of it seemed as he felt was a better man (sheriff) than John Wayne (shootist) and I like the part when the when John Wayne had had enough of him and offer to shoot him, Morgan stated you would not dare and John Wayne stated watch me. Morgan put on his hat and walked out.  The sheriff character was an arrogant jerk.

The Searchers

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

Hondo

The Horse Soldiers

I have all of his westerns on DVD from the early 1940's except Circus World.  Have a scattering of his poverty row westerns also.

The Shootist is the one I like the best, but there are many more that I like.

Big Jake is my favorite.

I faced it a long time ago. John Wayne wasn't much of a actor but he always played John Wayne no matter what the movie was.

My all time favorite is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.  Probably as much for Lee Marvin as for John Wayne.  Second is The Quiet Man because my Mom's Irish and I was a St. Patrick's day baby.  The Searchers.  McClintock, followed by the rest.

John Wayne was in a compromised state of health during it’s filming, and it showed. Probably made his role that much stronger.

Watched it on tv with my grandma, who really was in end stage cancer. She loved the movie in a bittersweet way.

Shucks, eyes are watering again just thinking about it.
