Cowboy Heros -- Who Is Left?

Cholla

Recommended Posts

After seeing Alpo's recent post and the recent death of James Drury, I am wondering just who is left of the silver screen greats.

I was originally thinking of just those that traditionally played in westerns up until the 1970s but that would exclude Lonesome Dove, Silverado, Tombstone, and the multitude of westerns that Sam Elliot and Tom Selleck have starred in.

How about a list of stars that were in multiple westerns and are still alive:

Bruce Dern

Tom Selleck

Sam Elliot

Kevin Costner

Kurt Russell

Clint Eastwood

Henry Darrow

Buck Taylor

And with it, stars that did one or two roles that so impacted us that they will forever be considered a western star.

Val Kilmer

Robert Duvall

Who else?

Sadly, the list is shrinking rapidly.

Pssst, Sam Shephard is at the last round up.

I take it someone added and then removed him as he passed in 2017.

Robert Taylor threw me as there has been two. One has passed a long time ago.

Robert Duvall

One or two? I count nine.

Yeah, Shephard was on a list above.

I was thinking about Longmire when reading the topic and had completely neglected the great Robert Taylor of past.

Apologies.

Robert Taylor (the elder) was born  Spangler Arlington Brugh; if anyone ever needed a SASS alias, it was him.  Great actor of the 40's, 50's and 60's; once played Billy the Kid, and starred in many other Westerns.  Died in 1969.

Robert Taylor the younger is  an Australian who stars in the current Longmire series.

Oh, I don't know, Pard. I kinda think Spangler Brugh would be a dandy alias.

Maybe not a "hero" in the masculine sense, but Olivia De Havilland was in a couple of westerns: They Died With Their Boots On, Dodge City, Santa Fe Trail and The Proud Rebel.

And as Maid Marion in "Robin Hood" she rode the horse that would come to be known as Trigger.  Olivia De Havilland on Trigger is about as pretty as pretty gets. :)

I would like to see more westerns with Thomas Haden Church. He was Robert Duvall’s partner in Broken Trail. Thought he dressed and fit the part well.

I just wish that Scott Eastwood could act. He sorta looks and talks like his dad but if a director told him that limping was part of the scene.....he'd have to shoot him in the foot.....twice.

In one way or another, everyone that play, compite or just enjoy our wonderful legacy is a hero keeping alive history and traditions of American life.

I wasn't thinking very well. You are correct. Although I think I liked him best in Secondhand Lions.

Amen.

THC was awesome as Tom Harte in Broken Trail. One of my favorites. I have a complete Tom Harte shooting costume for cowboy matches.

He had a small part in Tombstone. I won't say which. You'll have to rewatch it to see for yourself. (Oh darn... gotta watch Tombstone again. Lol.)
