First Match after Covid

Captain Bill Burt

Recommended Posts

I thought it might be interesting to start a thread that speculates about something good: our first match after Covid.

From when this whole mess started back in March my hope has been that we could resume shooting SASS matches by the first Saturday in May, which for us is the River Bend Rough Riders match.  That's a long stretch without shooting given our last match was Doc Hollidays on the second Saturday in March.

How about  you?

we were able and will continue to hold practice days on our match days.  We have 9 buildings which allows for 18 shooters given the 6 foot separation.  Was planning on 1½ hour sessions but since had a total of 11 shooters we went back to normal routine of come when you  want to and shoot for as long as you wish.

did indicate the members needed to be aware of their own health situations and figure that into  their attendance (or not)

It looks like the matches out here are shut down through April and May more than likely. There are some funny covid-19 related starting lines being bounced around, it ought to be a lot of fun when we get started again.

Haven't shot since Nov 2019, looking forward to the first one, hopefully in May!

Our park is completely shut down at least through 6/30. We are a bit of a hotspot right now

From what I could tell it's going to depend on what area you're in.  Based on the President's guidelines the Governors will decide when to returning to normalcy.  I'm hoping that we can get back into the saddle sometime in June, fingers crossed.  But if this goes on too much longer I won't be able to fit into any of my cowboy pants.

The range where my wife and I practice is still open - just not for matches.  We are practicing there about once a week.  I bought a case of clays at Wally World yesterday.  It's time to bust some birds too.

I suspect matches might resume in June.  I'm signed up for some major matches this Fall and hope they are not cancelled.

We have a dedicated range in a fairly rural setting.  We are there nearly every weekend for range maintenance as are a couple others.  Sometimes we take guns and practice a little, sometimes not.  Our matches are held on the 4th and 5th Sundays.  This month is another cancelled match.  Our state match was scheduled for Memorial Day weekend but we postponed it until September.  If the shelter in place is lifted, we might be able to have a monthly match that weekend and again the following.  Only time will tell.  One state match that was supposed to be this weekend was cancelled weeks ago.

Since this virus is going to be around a while and rules will only be loosened not drooped has anyone given any thought to check for fever at sign in using an infrared

temp checker and having masks to buy for shooters that do not have them.  Could be other things the clubs may have to do for another year or so to keep us safe from ourselves.

I will just wait until something of normalcy returns

I’m hoping the public will rise up and put pressure on these governors to end the shutdown. I realize some people will still need to shelter but I do not believe in punishing the masses for 1/10 of 1% of the general population

Sorry I'm already tired of seeing patients die or go home with severely damaged lungs and on oxygen for who knows how long. It's a tough decision. I have no faith in humanity to be smart if lockdown ends too soon.

Kid, I’m sorry you have had to endure this, but I still do not see it as a reason to shut down a country’s economy and lock down the citizens for such a small percentage of the population, and just to let you know I’m probably at good odds to become one of the patients your referring to. I would still sacrifice myself so my children and grandchildren can stay working and prosper

It wouldn't only be the C-19 patients. Heart attack deaths that could normally be saved (sorry hospital is full, Cardiac Dr's out sick or in ICU) same for strokes , ruptured appendix etc... That's why we have to "flatten the curve". We can't allow our medical system to be over run everywhere.

Sorry to Capt. Bill for hijacking this thread.

Sorry, not buying it. The numbers have not been right since the beginning anywhere in the world. Everything has been conjecture. Flattening the curve just stretches the virus contamination over a longer period. It doesn’t stop it.

I put this up in my reloading room to remind me that this will be over eventually, and we'll be able to get back to burning powder and slinging lead with our friends. 1597648070_IMG_3463(600x800).thumb.jpg.78f5f80afd82b4b4d62eebdbfcc03d9f.jpg

Well, right now we are furloughing medical staff. I think we have plenty of beds left over from elective surgeries. I don’t believe anyone has passed for lack of a bed or ventilator at this point, even in New York City

I found some squirrels who were not practicing social distancing yesterday so I used a falling block and a lever rifle to enforce the directive as practice for the next match.:D

Taking on that responsibility/liability could ruin a club permanently. That’s a plaintiff lawyer all-you-can-eat buffet.

There you go again, Capt. Bill. Rubbing it in that us Northerners have extending periods without shoots. Our last match was October and the next might not be until June. That will make for a very short season.

I'm ready to start matches TODAY !

This is all a Deep State rouse to control the population, feed it a dose of socialism, and steal it's liberty.

the World Puppet masters released this virus from a lab to overthrow the most successful President and the strongest economy the world has ever seen.

the Big corporations get Billions, yet Corporations like Nike and Dick's refuse to pay their bills, their rent, and they layoff 200,000 people - failure to pay will seize the economy, and cause a revolution !

the average small business PPP nets each business less than $60,000, but 4,412 business get $5m or more !?!?

Now the Governmet wants access to your phone for "contact tracing"

i will not give up my liberty without a fight.

what time is the match tomorrow ?

So are you also willing to sacrifice the lives of your wife and kids?  That has to be a part of your decision to let the CV-19 pathogen respread by stopping the lock-down.   This bug is extremely serious and  contagious.  Folks can't get back to work if they're dead or linked up to oxygen cylinders.

All of the medical people are saying the same thing.  The lock down was, and continues to be, necessary.   To terminate it too soon and allow people to travel and comingle before all the infectious people are identified will enable CV-19 to respread and surge again, which will only force a second, much longer and more strictly enforced lock-down.

Too many people are still cavalier about being in denial.  They are creating their own lock down problems, through noncompliance.  First they claimed it was no bigger deal than the annual Flu.  But now we know  it is far more serious and contagious than the flu.  When did you ever see supplemental tent morgues having to be set up in the streets to handle the numbers of people dying of the flu?   The mortality associated with CV-19 far exceeds the deaths from any epidemic we have seen in most of our lifetimes.

We snuck the March match in and April is at the EOM for us so I hoping we don't have to miss any.......but the gun club hasn't said exactly when it might re-open. If they don't open I have alternative plans on how I can hold the match. But my fingers are crossed that elected officials that are overstepping their boundaries will start the right choices.

This thread probably won't  last long so I'll sneak this in as well. The reason they closed things down was so the hospitals didn't get overran all at once. Thinking you can hide and that will somehow saves lives is not realistic. The Spanish Flu was around for 3 years so are you willing to hide for 2.5 more years if that happens? Also if you are waiting for  vaccine the AIDS virus came out in 1981 and there is no vaccine as of today......so again how long are you willing to hide?

If you got it before they knew what it was, if you got it last month, if you get it next month or you get it next year after it comes around again the results are the same........nobody is "killing" anyone else. There is being cavalier and there is being realistic and looking at real numbers and states that didn't do anything until last vs states that much more much earlier and comparing real data rather than finger pointing, fear tactics and parroting left wing media narratives. The best thing you can do that is in your power is try to get healthy not hide for the rest of your life IMO. Dang should I really hit save.........lol Aw what the heck.

Thinking you can hide and that will somehow saves lives is not realistic. We will all bump into this eventually and they knew that the goal was not to have too many people infected ALL at once. This notion that if you stay home for a few weeks you save a bunch of lives is very incorrect and misleading. First off. All my kids are grown and gone. They all live in different states. My wife feels the same way as I do about the virus. If your so inclined to believe all these statistics about the spread then you should realize that there is very small risk for anyone under 65 without underlying conditions to succumb to the virus. Those younger people also make up 95 percent of the work force as long as you don’t count the old idiot politicians.

Half my family are medical professionals and they all agree that there is an extremely small risk for most of the population to fear this virus.

If you’ve been a smoker all your life or haven’t taken care of your health or you were born with health issues then perhaps you should take extra precautions, but I won’t try to force you to do that. That’s your decision and I would respect it.  It would help if others did the same

My understanding is that the peak for manifestation of symptoms and demand for hospital resources isn't projected to be until around May 1.  The numbers we have seen so far could well be due to keeping people at home as much as they can stand. I don't foresee shooting again until the fall, maybe next year. Hot weather in the southeast isn't fun anyway. As a Cattle Baron I cannot afford to be reckless. Frankly, I miss reloading as much as shooting, but of course the social outlet is greatly missed too. I hope everyone is doing okay. I will look to others to lead the way and be responsible for good reason about encouraging folks to mingle. Meanwhile I will try not to act like an addict who can't get a hit. I have actually been thinking about a new hobby to take up the slack.

I don't mean to rub it in!  Us southern folk get a bit spoiled and forget about what our northern pards have to deal with.  This is by far the longest I've been without shooting a SASS match since I joined back in 2011.
