I have more fun cooking off a Thompson with a drum than a stick!

What self respecting 1930's era gangster would dare think about shooting up a rival gang with stick mags.

I had a drum for an AK, never liked it , never used it. One thing Gun Jesus forgot was how slow to load they are.

I've never used one myself, but I bet they're a king size PITA to load!

That's on the semi - the 1927 semi-automatic carbine. That's because they fire from a closed bolt. I don't believe they have a provision to lock the bolt back. AOC sells (sold) a dingus they referred to as a "third hand" that allows you to put a drum into the 1927.

Real ones - the 1921 or the 1928 - you just pull the actuator back and it locks in place, since they fire from an open bolt. With the bolt back you simply push the magazine release forward with your right thumb why WHILE you are sliding the drum into place.

It's not difficult, but neither is it quick. I read someplace that Marines storming the islands in the Pacific would go ashore with an L drum in the gun, which gave them fifty rounds, but when the drum ran dry (or jammed) they would just pull it out, drop it and go on, replacing it with a 20 round stick. They considered it a disposable. It took too long to reload and to change drums in the gun.

Alpo is completely correct. Without that "third hand", the drum is a REAL pain in the ass to remove. I'm pretty quick on the trigger with a semi-auto Thompson but shooting (or even watching) a full-auto Thompson with a drum mag is an "one of the best times I've ever had shooting" moments. Given a large enough cardboard target, I really do believe that you could write your name in bullets.

My AK has three drums. Each holds 75 rounds.  Fun to shoot, easy to swap mags, heavy to carry, they take a little time to load, and they fit my SKS too!

I keep one in my SHTF bag along with several stick magazines, a speed loader for stick magazines, and a couple hundred rounds in a bag.  There’s other stuff in that bag too!

There’s another bag with shotgun ammo, a big knife, and the other two drums.

I have other equipment for such occasions as well.  On a fun day, once a year, I take it all out and put everything through it’s paces to make sure it all performs as required. Then I clear, clean, oil, and reload everything as needed and put it all back where it belongs.

Drums ARE fun!!

I have actually never loaded or used a drum magazine. I haven’t owned any guns that could use a drum, except I did own an AK-47 and have AR-15s that drums are available for (outside Calipornia) but I would never bother with them.

I have watched friends and people at ranges use drum mags in various guns but it always seemed at some point they all had a problem.

Start with drum, then carry sticks. More beginning firepower which is VERY important.
