Four Reasons Why Americans Are Buying Firearms During COVID-19 Pandemic

Springfield, VA – Gun Owners of America (GOA) Legislative Counsel, Michael Hammond, outlined four reasons why gun sales have surged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

First, in general, in times of uncertainty, Americans think of their families — and want to make sure they have the wherewithal to provide for them and protect them and keep them safe. As a result, firearms purchases climbed 300 percent during a sample day from the sales exactly one year before.

Second, Americans believe — correctly — that repressive politicians in some parts of the country will use (and are using) this crisis to try to shut down the Second Amendment. They have done this by openly shutting down gun shops — by autocratic dictate. They have also shutdown the ability to undergo background checks and mandatory training which legislators foolishly made as prerequisites to exercising Second Amendment rights. This is one of the reasons why GOA has called for Constitutional Carry, so honest citizens can carry firearms for the defense of themselves and others without jumping through government hoops. Furthermore, with many of the courts closed, Americans have no avenue for contesting this totalitarian power grab in some areas.

Thankfully, there is some good news. North Carolina, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maine, Vermont, and Los Angeles county have retreated from efforts to outlaw the Second Amendment after pressure from gun owners. But New York, Massachusetts, Washington, New Mexico, possibly Michigan, and several counties in California persist.
GOA is pursuing legal action in these localities that have shut down gun stores. In fact, GOA has recently sent “cease and desist” letters to the executive departments in New Mexico and Washington. Please click here to visit GOA’s Press Center to see additional “cease and desist” letters which will be sent in the ensuing days, as well as, similar letters which have been sent over the past couple of weeks.

Third, many of the same states which are outlawing people’s ability to protect themselves are simultaneously releasing murderers, rapists, burglars, and muggers back on the streets. The Wall Street Journal reports that business burglaries are going up in New York City. And, for those who protest that the only ones being released are “non-violent” criminals, we would point out that 90% of all crimes are “plea-bargained” and that the crimes which inmates are “convicted of” are seldom the more serious crimes they actually committed.

Fourth, gun owners and people who wanted to own guns correctly assumed that guns and ammunition would be flying off the shelves — and that those who wanted to purchase guns and ammunition later, rather than sooner, might not be able to.

Michael Hammond, or another GOA spokesperson, is available for interviews. Gun Owners of America is a nonprofit grassroots lobbying organization dedicated to protecting the right to keep and bear arms without compromise. GOA represents over two million members and activists. For more information, visit GOA’s Press Center.
