Utah Bob #35998
Population of us is 330 Million. But the fear spreads. The couple in the apartment next to us just came back and unloaded there car with armloads of supplies. And the folks here are not ignorant knuckledraggers. They, are by and large, educated young professionals with good jobs. But once the panic takes hold, it’s hard to stop. There are 2 cases in this state. There are 800,000 in this city. There was an hour long local press conference this morning by the Emergency Management people. I won’t go into the moronic questions asked by the reporters. I’’m reminded of the scene in Men in Black where Will Smith asks why not tell people there are aliens on Earth. “What’s the big secret? People are smart. They can handle it”, he says. Tommy Lee Jones replies, “No. A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it.”
Cypress Sun
Oh great, Corona virus and aliens. Next thing you know, all of the Raid will be hoarded also....or is it slug repellent. It must suck for you and Carole to have to live among all those "people" after living in paradise for so long. I continue to keep ya'll in my thoughts. J-BAR #18287
Yes, folks are overreacting. I would rather have an overreaction on the side of safety than complacency. I’m not sure I can define overreacting versus panic. Like Justice Potter Stewart said about pornography, it’s hard to define but I know it when I see it. Overreacting is tolerable, panic is not. Bob, hope you and your wife work through this and can watch many Colorado Rockies games together this summer.
Utah Bob #35998
Spring training has been cancelled along with the first two weeks of the season. No telling where this will end. people would be less panicky if they would do a few minutes of real research instead of reading Facebook and dumb e mails. Maybe because "coronavirus" refers to a group of viruses, some of which have been around for years, and others (such as the version that results in the current illness - COVID-19) are much more recently discovered. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus LL

Trailrider #896
It's not aliens I worry about. I'm scheduled to have cataract surgery this coming Tuesday. So far, the eye doc is NOT cancelling it. I'd like to get it done because my other eye isn't far behind with a cataract and it is getting harder to drive, read, etc. I have been mostly staying away from going to the store, except for stocking up on toilet paper and paper towels! I have Type 2 diabetes and at 77+, am supposed to be of greater risk. I am also running low on toner for my computer's printer. Should I go buy some? Now they are saying the virus can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours. Also, the toners are made in Japan. How long ago? Do I need to worry about picking up something from the cardboard cartons? Is this also fake news? I'm NOT panicing...yet. Somebody want to tell me when I should panic?

It'll all be Trump's fault. The Intergalactic Defense League of Aliens will form a committee for the purpose of determining if the Earth should be impeached from the Galaxy. If the vote is for impeachment, the aliens with then come back and the least of the problems with be toilet paper shortages. Buffalo Creek Law Dog
Went to Costco today for eye exam and new glasses. It was pandemonium, They had two people checking for your card when entering. Ever since I can remember, they only had 1 person at the entrance door. The eye clinic receptionist said when she came to work, the parking lot was full and the store wasn't even open yet. The checkout line was all the way to the other end of the store. For some reason people are panicking. Last year 3500 Canadians died of the normal flu and so far this year only 1 has died of the Corona flu and he was an old guy in a nursing home. Pat Riot
I am currently standing in an Orthopedic Clinic waiting room to be seen. The room is about 15’x20’. There are about 20 people in here all sitting in chairs next to each other waiting their turn. No one has masks on. No one seems concerned about the 6’ rule. No panic here in Newport Beach on a rainy day. There might be a little panic if the doc recommends spine surgery but I think I will bear it well. Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
The Spanish Flu of 1918-1920 hit the world country by country because transportation was slower then. Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
How to create a pandemic virus. choose a species unrelated to humans, for discussion here, choose iguanas. Isolate a few viruses that infect iguanas, the viruses need not be fatal to iguanae. Hit those isolated specimens of viruses with xrays, gigaroentgens of xrays. Maybe some mutations will occur. See if it does anything to anybody. Repeat.

Corona viruses are a very broad family of virus. Been around for ages, You have probably been infected with one before. WHAT? Had a common cold? yep you probably have had a corona infection. These tend to do their dirty work in the winter and early spring. The coronavirus is the cause of about 20% of colds. There are more than 30 kinds, but only three or four affect people. This particular strain is "new", probably been around awhile, there is speculation among Chinese scientists that this virus came from snakes
Utah Bob #35998
As soon as the WHO officially said it’s a pandemic, the panic ramped up. J-BAR #18287
Well, while we are worrying about diseases, some perspective: Tuberculosis is still the #1 killer worldwide. About 25% of the world’s population is carrying TB bacilli, and TB kills about 1.5 MILLION people each year. Don’t hear about it much on the news. How about malaria? A couple of million cases a year ( depending on source of statistics), with nearly half a million deaths annually. After the coronavirus panic fades, I’m sure we can get folks worked up about something else.
