So, this train has gotten a bit derailed. What I was hoping for is tips from Match Directors on what you are doing to support the health and well being of your shooters in light of COVID-19? We have a team focusing specifically on health and safety for the attendees of our 5th Annual Lazy Arrow ShootOut. And, since I kicked off the post, I'm happy to share some of the things we are doing:

• Hand sanitizers and paper towels at all unloading tables.

• Changing our "pot luck" dinner to a served dinner (eliminates folks handling serving spoons, and food coming from various sources).

• Having our morning pastries and donuts separately bagged (in a sanitary kitchen) rather than out in the open.

• Ensuring our paper coffee cups are upside down so folks pick up cup from bottom and not from lip.

• Hand sanitizers at our "Cantina" (coffee bar).

• Replace our spotting sticks with pieces of red paper (8-1/2"x11" heavy red paper cut in thirds lengthwise) - used and then tossed out.

• Wiping timers as they go from TO to TO.

• Dedicated timers for each bay, cleaned before they are put back in Bay box.

• Hand sanitizers outside and inside our showers and toilets.

• Increasing number of posses to reduce number of folks on each posse.

• Mention that this is a non-handshake, non-high-five match.

• Asking our attendees to follow traditional sanitary procedures (re: coughing, sneezing).

• Provide nitrile gloves at bays for any shell-picker who wants to use them.

SO... the question is, are there things like this you are doing?

Oh come on guys.

On the first day in office Trump is handed three envelopes by an Obama staffer written by Obama himself with a note, "When in trouble open in order".  Trump tosses the envelopes in a drawer forgets about them.

A few months later when poll numbers sink he remembers the enveloprs.  He opens the first one ans it says "Blame me.".

He does and poll numbers go up.

A year later having trouble with North Korea and Mexico he opens the second. "

Find a scapegoat".  So Trump does and publically fires Rex Tillerson.

Now with the virus and the stock market swoon he opens the third.

Inside it says: "First get three envelopes and three pieces of paper."

Amazing, how conversation comment just stop. I was one of the participants of that thread. I do not recall anyone calling anyone names and such. Just a lively discussion. Anyway, I’m not a match director just a lady trying to get back into sport. Y’all take care.

I was a match director at a recent match while my state was free of the virus, so I made no special preparations.  The only thing I would add to your list is D-Lead soap available in the restrooms.  That soap would remove lead residue while your shooters wash their hands.

No I don’t think they should have a say in whether or not I participate.

They have a say in whether they participate. If they think it’s unsafe they can stay home.

At that point it’s none of their business what I do.

If they have the right to choose to participate then so do I.

This is so political! In 2009 when Obama was in office and we were hit with the swine flu, Over 16 million people in the US were infected! over 100,000 were hospitalize and over 18 thousand died they didn't shut down the Country then? And the news media was saying how great Obama was and what a great job he was doing and it took him about five months to respond? So far the US has had 40 deaths and they're shutting down the country?

I agree with this. It's kinda like Smoking... on the one hand it is totally a personal decision. I did it for MANY years until I decided to quit. I NEVER forced it on others and never did it within THEIR space/zone.  As long as it does NOT have any effect upon me (family) , then I don't have a Dog in the fight. When it does effect me then you can expect that I will get involved.  So it comes back to are we as Match Directors going to get directly involves with the containment issue on a wider scale by cancelling matches that we have control over. If we do not put on the match, the decision to stay home is no longer in the hands of the shooter. We have taken it upon ourselves to make that choice for him/her. I don't like being put into that spot. However, it is absolutely indisputable that, THAT,  is the direction things are going. Things ARE being shut down across the nation more and more each day. As Wimpey as it might sound I would love to pass this buck off and have the decision made by someone at a higher level because I am (at least at this point in time) very reluctant to tell others what they can and can not do.  I am most assuredly well within the danger zone of this Virus. I have a greatly diminished immune system and I am an old geezer to boot. So... for my own personal choice, I would choose to stay away for a few months rather than increase my chances of getting this virus. THAT is my choice. BUT.. being Match Director puts me in a tough spot. I don't want to take that freedom of choice away from others.  If the higher powers decide that gatherings such as our Annual match must not take place, then I will adhere, if not, and it is still an economically sound decision, then I would not feel comfortable cancelling the event. Considering freedom and safety are both paramount, considering financial aspects are just a fact of doing business. Clubs can not afford to invest in a annual match and have it fail because of mass dropouts. I am anxiously waiting to see just how far the ramifications of California's Governor Newsom will go. If it is a MANDATE, then the decision will have been made for us. If it ends up just being a suggestion, then both the decision and the Liability will fall upon those providing the event. It is by no means a simple and easy decision to make.

Subject: Stanford Hospital announcement on Coronavirus.

Here is a some hopefully good information that goes beyond just washing your hands.

From a member of the Stanford hospital board.
This is their feedback for now on the Coronavirus:
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - CORONAVIRUS --

1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold

2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.

3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a
temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.

4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it
drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.

5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours
- so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon
as you can with a bacterial soap.

6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours.
normal laundry detergent will kill it.

7. Drinking warm water is effective for
all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.

8. Wash your hands frequently
as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can
happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and
so on.

9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in
warm water will suffice.

10. Can't emphasis enough - drink plenty of water!

THE SYMPTOMS
1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat
lasting 3/4 days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the
trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days
further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're
drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.

Serious excellent advice by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone
should ensure your mouth & throat are moist, never dry. Take a few sips of
water every 15 minutes at least. Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth,
drinking water or other liquids will wash them down through your throat and
into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus. If you
don't drink enough water more regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and
into the lungs. That's very dangerous. Please send and share this with family
and friends. Take care everyone and may the world recover from this Coronavirus
soon.

The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days. How can one
know if he/she is infected? By the time they have fever and/or cough and go to
the hospital, the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it's too late (Fibrosis is
not reversible). Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do
every morning. Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10
seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort,
stiffness or tightness, etc., it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs,
basically indicates no infection. In critical times, please self-check every
morning in an environment with clean air.

Can we stop the madness and finger pointing for a minute.  The firm I own remediates structures. I have met with seven health department directors to discuss the current situation.  There is not a lot of info due to the fact that the scientific investigation is ongoing.  In the google world we live in everyone thinks all problems can be answered in seconds.  This is not reality.  Right now I have three products believed to be effective due to the fact that they kill viruses in the same family.  That being said, the elderly, infants and people with suppressed immune systems or other pre-existing conditions should be cautious.  The guidance I’m seeing at the moment is eat right, hydrate, exercise, sleep, don’t touch eyes nose or mouth, wash your hands as much as possible.

Back on topic, I would do away with spotting sticks, don’t crowd one another at the tables, cough into your arm, after set up and take down wash your hands, TOs should use a sanitizer after handling the timer and don’t touch your face.

I'm sorry you feel that I'm the problem.  I thought COVID-19 was the problem.  Who knew?

You're certainly entitled to that opinion, though it's a bit presumptuous given you don't really know anything about me or my personal circumstances.

My wife and I BOTH shot today, so no need to worry about bringing COVID home to her.  She's barely in her 40s and in great health.  I'm a bit older, but also in pretty good health.   Our three children are well under the age at which COVID becomes an issue, so again, no worries there.

I've been working from home for the last week and will do so for at least the next two weeks.  My wife is working from home for at least two weeks.  My kids are going to school from home for the next two weeks.   The next time I , or they, interact in person with anyone other than family will likely be next week at the cowboy match.  I'll look at the circumstances on the ground then and we'll decide if the match is worth the risk.

You asked a question for which different people will have different answers based on their personal circumstances and risk tolerances.  I answered.  There's no need for a personal attack, and definitely no need for you to accuse me of putting my family at risk when in all honesty you don't know what you're talking about.

Get off your high horse.  Your pontificating about what the rules are and how people should conduct themselves gets old fast, particularly given you're wrong more often than you're right.

Sorry Cpt Burt but in those 2 weeks that it’s incubating inside you, your younger wife and safe children how many adults and children will you guys bump into including us old fart grand parents who will potentially wind up in the hospital if we get it? We ALL have a dog in the fight so to do without a couple months of political rallies, car races, movies, ball games, gun shows and cas matches to keep this crap from spreading is not too much to sacrifice. It took 4-5 months for draconian nazi china to turn the corner and we haven’t even started wide scale testing here so we honestly don’t know how big this monster is. You might already be infected like that dumb basketball player.

Hi Ed,

I don't believe we've every spoken. I think those are fair questions.  The answer is zero for the first week.  We're sitting on weeks of food, full tanks of gas in both cars, plenty of meds, plenty of liquid refreshment, we're set for a spell.  Our time will be spent at home, or down by the lake. That's it.  It's not like I didn't think this through, I stopped going into work a week ago.  If need be we can stay isolated for two weeks without too much inconvenience.

I haven't spoken about what's too big a sacrifice, but based on how things are right now, a CAS match is well within the guidelines the CDC has put out. The risk was minimal, that was my position on it today, and based on anecdotal evidence, that was the opinion of the vast majority of SASS shooters today.

We'll see what things look like next week, but I anticipate that we'll both be on the range again.

You’re doing the right thing to lay low, Bill. I certainly hope that we are all healthy and we stay that way. My once a year military show [thousands attend] in Baltimore was cancelled along with my small [20 worshippers] Methodist church services for the next 2 weeks here in rural NC. Don’t know about my local club match [only 12 shooters] in 2 weeks but Like I said we just don’t know how big this chinese monster is but it’s surely going to get bigger before it goes away. And I saw something the other day about people who beat it and got well getting reinfected? There were 3 waves of 1918 Spanish flue with the second wave being the deadliest. Too many unknowns.

Hopefully this link works.  Interesting read on using sunshine and fresh air to treat flu.

Interesting but Influenza is an orthomyxoviridae negative sense RNA virus whereas SARS-nCoV 2 is a coronaviridae positve sense RNA virus.  Expecting that it will act like Influenza might be a bad assumption.  Hanks got COVID-19 in Australia where it is summer.  It may take herd immunity to put an end to it.

Whoever wrote it didn't know the difference between fibrosis and pneumonia, or that normal human body temp is 37 degrees C, at which temp they assert the virus could not survive.  I have no doubt it is folklore and not medicine.

Agree.

In contemplating whether to hold monthly matches or not, I've looked at the many varied considerations.  I have explored the recent medical infectious disease literature in depth and I've talked with numerous Medical Doctors, (including the Internist to whom I am 48 yrs married.)  I have not encountered a single medical professional or source who is encouraging or wiling to state that it is acceptable to convene nonessential indoor or outdoor human gatherings of any size right now.   All of them seem to agree that avoidance of gatherings/new exposure is of key importance for everyone, and extremely so regarding older and immuno-compromised members of the public, both from the individual safety and broader public health standpoint.

The CA State Health Officer has recommended that large gatherings (250 or more persons) be cancelled and that persons in the older, at-risk category should not attend gatherings exceeding ten persons.  All events need to maintain six feet of interpersonal separation, at minimum.

The above discussion reflects our current purely medical guidance, apart from what we ourselves might desire or expect, regarding our matches.

At some point ALL Americans are going to have to understand the need to work together to break the COVID-19 transmissibility chain.  If everyone just elects to continue business as in the past, and ignores the now-universal medical advice, the public medicine focused COVID-19 containment and mitigation efforts will have little to no real implementation.  It was Einstein who defined "Insanity" as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result.

Either we will see voluntary cooperation for a relatively short time, or eventually we will have longer enforced quarantines, like Italy, Iran, China or South Korea.  Absent either of those, we definitely will experience longer term and possibly more life threatening COVID-19 exposure.

It is by no means a simple and easy decision to make.

i also agree , when were we given permission to hold others responsible for our behavior , pick and choose for your self based on your evaluation of the threat level - same as the local convenience store or liqueur store ,

if you are feeling ill - be responsible , stay home dont expose others , you know - act appropriately

and for your own sake still use good practice in your interactions - we could say the same or all the venereal diseases - use your own good sense and scruples
