I don't know if it's the media frenzy is falsely out of control or facts about this is true but it's making people panic about just 59 confirmed cases in the US.

To tell you the truth I'm much more worried about a potential presidential candidate with a socialism agenda that would immediately change the current state and future of our beloved country.

Cuba's government changed overnight back in 1953 and look how they have not progressed in 67 years!  The younger generation wants the government to take care of them. Democracy is people in charge of the government!

Correct! My mistake.

The revolution began in July 1953, and continued sporadically until the rebels finally ousted Batista on 31 December 1958, replacing his government with a revolutionary socialist state.

Our county's future comes down to the people in charge of the government or the government in charge of the people

It's downright scary with today's young people  not recognizing the fact that we had to fight and sacrifice lives to get this great freedom way of life.

I think maybe the media is making a big deal of this to bring down the market so they can report something bad about Trump,

That being said I think this virus is posing a significant threat. More so than the Ebola scare of a few years back. The Communist countries in Asia are downplaying the size of the problem. Vietnam announced they had cured all of their patients two days ago. Interesting, in that there is no known cure yet. I wouldn't believe them if they told me the sun came up this morning. I hope researchers can get a handle on it quickly.

Anyone notice that since the year 2000 there has been a Pandemic Scare every federal election year? AND every time this happens people from the government tell everyone "We are on the job and here to help you" and nothing major happens and life goes on until the next federal election year....

The bottom line is the government really  doesn't care what happens to you as long as the govt representatives stock prices don't tank...That's all it's really about anyway. Money.

Well, New York state is monitoring 700 people suspected of having Coronavirus. About 120 individuals have been placed in quarantine. So, I would advise folks to avoid NY including any travel plans that take you into or thru the state. Perhaps the US government should quarantine NY state to prevent the spread of the highly infectious disease to the rest of the nation.

I treated this situation as a reminder to assess my family's emergency preparedness.  I found our pantry quite low on dried beans and rice.  I've restocked and bought some extra pasta too.  I need to fill some propane cylinders emptied last summer and fill some gas cans with fresh, alcohol-free gasoline for the generators.  A natural disaster can strike at any time and I want my family to remain warm, safe and fed.

I always avoid NY, but mostly because I am allergic to their gun laws.

I had not heard about the New York situation.    Is this being widely reported?

I would hate to think someone is purposely keeping this on the QT.

700 suspected with 150 quarantined is serious stuff.

Perspective. Every year people die from the flu.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/03/the-flu-has-already-killed-10000-across-us-as-world-frets-over-coronavirus.html

We always have food and water set aside for earthquakes and disasters but I refuse to fall prey to the hype of this Coronavirus.  The media is blowing it out of proportion. The government seems to be pretty nonchalant about it except the CDC and bureaucrats whose jobs depend on appearances.

I went to the emergency room last week because I messed my back up and my right leg was numb. There were 80 beds in the ER and most beds were taken by people who had flu like symptoms and were freaking out about the Coronavirus. Normally they have 40 beds in use. They had to open the other 2 sections of the ER to have 80 beds open. I didn’t get an X-ray or an MRI of my back because staff was overwhelmed with people that were afraid they had the Coronavirus.

If I get the Coronavirus and die I guess I will have learned my lesson regarding my attitude about this “pandemic”. :P

The stats SubDeacon Joe laid out are telling.  Yes, so far flu kills about 20 times more people than CoVid19.  But Pat Riot  has a very valid point that the news media are needing a distraction to provide clearance for the Democrats poor debate performance.

I have to admit that I have not wanted to shake anyone's hand at the matches or anywhere else. I just tell them that I just got back from Hong Kong and I'm not feeling too good. That hand recoils rather quickly.

So there is a national shortage of masks due to everyone grabbing as many as they can to "protect" themselves from the Coronavirus.

Only problem is that the primary means of transmission is physical contact with an infected person or with a surface that they have contacted. Infectious disease expert in the WSJ this morning pointed out that best protection lies in the same habits that your Mom taught you - wash your hands, often and thoroughly; keep your hands off of your face; clean your counters and door knobs and other hard surfaces with disinfectant-type cleaner; and go wash your hands, again.  Medical protocol is to wash for 1.5-2.0 minutes per hand, paying particular attention to between your fingers and up over your wrists.

Even if you could find a suitable mask (N95 or better; forget the dust masks and surgical masks - they won't protect you), how often do you need to change it?  Daily?  Twice a day?  More? Less?  Some sources suggest that masks become breeding grounds for viruses once they are saturated with the moisture from your breath, becoming more likely to spread viruses.  And don't forget to shave that beard and 'stach - they interfere with a proper seal for the mask.

I'm doubling down on hand sanitizer, and trying to avoid sucking my thumb.

Police, providing service during this "crisis"

OBERLIN, Kan. —

The Decatur County Sheriff's Office in Oberlin, Kansas, said meth purchased locally might be contaminated with coronavirus (which is not true) and they are advising drug users to get their supplies tested for free.

It's the sheriff's attempt to get meth off the streets in northwest Kansas with a funny twist.

In a Facebook post, the Sheriff's Office asked users to bring their meth in to have it tested. The sheriff even said they would be willing to come to users’ homes if they’re too embarrassed to bring it in.

“If you have recently purchased meth locally, it may be contaminated with the coronavirus,” the post said. “Please take it to the sheriff's office or police department and they will test it for free.

“If you're not comfortable going into an office, please contact any officer and they'll test your meth in the privacy of your home. Please spread the word!”

According to the CDC, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state of Kansas. There have been 60 reported cases of the coronavirus in the United States.

If I gambled in the stock market I would think now might be a good time to think about buying stocks...then again with the sky falling one may want to wait...

I've been an investor for about 35 years, a couple years ago I decided to take my chips off the table and put it all into annuities. I was afraid Hillary would be elected and the market would tank. If I'd stayed in after Trump won an the markets went BSC I could have made some serious money. I'm thinking of buying some stock again. That's how you can make some money.....buy low when most are panicking and selling at the bottom. The trick is knowing where the bottom is. If I knew that I'd be filthy rich (which I'm not).  I bought and sold stock twice in an offshore drilling company and made some good money. Went to the well the third time and the stock dropped like a rock. Fortunately my profits on the first two times more than made up for the losses on the third time.

From what I’ve read, the value of most masks is to prevent the people wearing them from spreading disease by trapping fluid particles. The main ‘protection’ the mask provides the wearer is keeping them from putting their fingers in their nose and mouth.

That being said, I don’t see much difference between the garden-variety masks people walk around with, and a drip coffee filter.

You are correct. There are HEPA masks with pore size small enough to trap viruses, but unless you duct tape it to your face there is still air leak. I bet they're a witch to breathe thru. I have no personal experience, but I've made a zillion IV's in a laminar flow hood that have HEPA filters, and they have hellacious fans to force air thru those filters.
