Creeker, SASS #43022
A few months ago, I fell awkwardly on my house stairs (as opposed to falling gracefully, I guess). Well, my right shoulder has been bothering me for a while; but I'm a guy - so I ignored it and figured it would eventually get better. If you've read this far; you've already figured out that it has not gotten better. So, Painted Lady and Desert Scorpion; tiring of my incessant whining (and consuming ibuprofen like they are Skittles) forced me to go see a Dr. A tear inducing range of motion test and MRI later - I have TWO tears in my rotator cuff and a torn labrum. So a shot of cortisone (apparently no lidocaine - because the Dr was not overly impressed by my bravery in not seeking medical attention sooner. And she {rightfully} assumed I would do something incredibly stupid if the pain went away immediately) So I guess in a few days; we are going to schedule a digging expedition in my shoulder to see exactly the damage and course of repair. And I wondered my right handed, pull four '97 shotgun loading skills had deteriorated a bit. But never fear - I have full intentions of being back as mediocre and average as I ever was, very soon. Shooting Bull
Sorry to hear that my friend. As you may remember, I went through the exact same thing a few years ago. And as you have seen for yourself, I'm back to being as mediocre and average as I ever was. If I may offer some unsolicited advice, start lifting weights. Seriously. With that tear you won't be able to do any pressing movements or forward lateral movements but you can do side laterals and pulling movements like crazy. Start doing those to get the shoulder as strong as possible BEFORE going under the knife. Doing this will greatly decrease your recovery time afterwards. Then during recovery don't worry about strength, that'll come back in time. Instead focus on range of motion. If you lose that you'll never get it back. Best of luck to you. If you have any questions you've got my number. Not saying I'll answer, but you can call.
Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L
As the proud owner of 4(!) rotator cuff surgeries I can tell you the rehab is what makes it 'all better.' When the time comes do the exercises--that will make all the difference in the word. Best of luck you will come back
Hendo
So let me get this straight. You were reading the Wire in the bathroom and fell off the toilet? I'll hoist a glass to your quick recovery.
Major BS Walker Regulator
Mr. Creeker, I too am sitting here with time on my hands unable to shoot as I recover from Hernia surgery. Luckily I don't pull four with anything down there. Hope everything goes well.
Don Coyote, SASS #63736
Been there, done that, my friend. In Oct. 2014 I wanted to postpone RC surgery for two tears until after Bordertown but I also had a severely detached bicep tendon the OS felt would be unrepairable if I did so. So instead of having fun in Tombstone, I was in surgery that week. What I remember most was the very early PT (7 days) for range-of motion stretching. The PT & the surgeon were both athletic specialists and I was lucky to have that. The initial stretching was pure hell at 1st but by Dec 1, the brace came off except for sleeping or going to the store. As with you, I right handed and problem was in the rt. shoulder. That makes for some life changing adjustments for sure. What helped recovery most was performing the home pt exercises 3 times/day, religiously. BTW, I shot my 1st monthly match 5 months later in March '15. Good Luck, Creeker! You'll love the results!
Painted Mohawk SASS 77785
Yep been thru that myself , as previously said by others exercise to get the range of motion back is the key, strength will happen along the way...good luck !! Tequila Shooter
Now I'm going to tell you that I see no one else has. I went through a rebuild 2 years ago (rotator cuff, labrum, bicep, bone spurs). Took quite a while before it felt better. Here's the part no one has said. From wearing that arm brace and not being able to lift my arm I developed an itching rash in my armpit, I later found out it's not that uncommon. At the time I didn't know it but it's a fungus, much like a yeast infection on a woman. One day I was scratching like an old flea bitten hound dog and talking to a buddy on the phone. He had similar surgery and he told me that he had the same underarm issue, His remedy was to get a couple of cleaning wipes, you know the ones that are soaked in bleach and wiped down his armpit. So me being me I said to myself if it worked for him it'll work for me, so out came the bleach wipes. The pros - the itching stopped immediately, the cons - the yeast infection was replaced by a chemical burn. It burned for days but it did knock out the infection and the itching stopped. It was only after all this that I learned that there was a prescription that would've worked better. Lesson learned. Good luck, remember pain is only weakness leaving the body
