Question about baseball diamonds

About halfway down the first-base line there is a chalk mark 90° to the line going off towards foul territory. At first base there is another chalk Mark 90° to the line going off towards foul territory.

There is not a similar set of lines on the third-base line. It has nothing to do with where the base coaches stand.

Why is it there?

That's where the batter is supposed to run on his way to first base. If the the batter bunts for example and the catcher hits him with the ball he is out if he is not in that running lane; can't run to first base on the left(fair) side of that line.

I distinctly remember it in High School because I was a first baseman. If the 1st baseman starts out standing on the fouls side of the base sometimes it'll cause the base runner to shift to the infield and the catcher or pitcher can then hit them with the ball; not that I'd ever intentionally do that

Interesting...,

“7. First and third base fit within the square, but second base is measured to the center of the bag. Improperly placed second base is one of the most common mistakes made when setting up a baseball field.”

That’s why it’s a kite and not a square!

If the first baseman is standing on the foul side of first base when the pitcher releases to ball to home plate it is counted as a balk!  Any runners on base will be awarded the next base.  If no runners are on base, the batter is awarded a ball to the count.  The pitch is considered a "dead ball".

I meant post bunt. It's a little mind game to play with the baserunner.
