right: "In return we want you to balance the budget, build the wall, deport all illegals and deport all refugees."

left: "That is outrageous!"
right: "We offer you a compromise:  we give up our bump stocks, you build the wall, deport the illegals and refugees, and you can keep your budget."

This is how skin is put into the game.
Otherwise, the left comes to the table with nothing but the hot air of their demands, and usually walks away with something of tangible value to right.
