Which Marlin

Want to buy a new Marlin 1895CB/CBA in 45-70.

Not hunting with it. CBA with 18" barrel will do.
the CB with 26" barrels. while it looks good seems like overkill for a side match rifle.
Opinions?

Believe me when I say that 26” barrel will make a difference when shooting side matches! My 26” 1895 makes a mediocre long range shooter look like an almost decent shot:lol:

Take advantage of the long rifles potential, go with the 26”!

Depends on the parameters of the side match. Twenty years ago, we would shoot long-range rifle cal lever action out to 500 yards. In more recent years, I haven't seen anything more than 250 yards, and half that is even more common.

I have an 1895CB, and a 336CB 38-55, but normally use a Winchester M94 .38-55 "Legendary Frontiersman". Barrel length on the 336CB and M94 are 24", and the M94 is also a round barrel, which is a bit lighter.

OP,

Marlins are very hit-or-miss as to product quality and workmanship.
I have an 1894CB in 357, (2019.03 mfg) that is (so far) a well made rifle.

In retrospect, I wish I had bought the Winchester '73 (Miroku) instead.
There are numerous complaints about Remlins on the Marlin owners forum.
I don't have any need for a 45-70, but know it would not be another Remlin.

Thanx for the answers. I thought hard about it and decided that the long barrels is just too long for both my gun safe and the gun drawer in the truck.
Can't see much past 200 yards anymore so decided to go with the shorter barrel.
Again, thanks for your time.

  Red, you are welcome to try my 1895 to compare ideas.  I don't recall barrel length, but it works well and smoothly.

It has the Bascomb Marlin refinements........;)

Call or email and let me know.  It's WAAAY back in the safe.

Longer Barrel means longer magazine which really helps.

This^^^^  and shooting sticks work well with longer guns for side matches. The OP was in regards to side match use, so it seems. With a shorter barrel gun you will be stoking the magazine during a side match as most are 10 shot events and timed as well for a tie breaker. :)
