"Mad Mike" Hoare, RIP

Recommended Posts

Wow. I heard about him way back in the early 1980s and like you never figured he was still alive. What a character and a life. Now somebody needs to make a proper movie about him.

As the obit says, some say The Wild Geese was based upon him, at least loosely. So happens I rented that movie a couple of years back; it's quite good, and has a real all-star cast of mostly big Brit actors of the time: Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris, and several others:

The late William Butterworth III, writing as W.E.B. Griffin, in his series, "The Brotherhood of War", in the books "The New Breed" and "The Aviators" briefly portrayed Hoare heading the mercenary force opposing the murderous "Simba" uprising in the Peoples Republic of Congo.  I'm not sure, but I think the term "wild geese" was used long before, referring to Irish ex-patriots, who served in a number of different armies, including the British Army.  RIP, "Mad Mike"!
