Seamus McGillicuddy
“Ratting” is a long standing tradition in Britain. I was just reading a story about an English boarding school boy circa 1900 who attends a ratting at a local farm. Bring your own stave and a dog if you have one. Dogs and beaters drive the rats out of the barn and into the open where more dogs and men and boys with stout sticks await the kill. Most exhilarating! Alpo
I guess folks never thought about why a rat terrier was called a rat terrier.

MizPete
Cats do mice. Those rats look nearly as big as your usual cat.

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
A big cat might kill one or two but then go take a nap. Terriers would just keep working. Each dog killed nearly 100.

And if the dog keeps shaking it, holler, "Drop it! Dead'un," according to the historical fiction I've read from authors known for their preference of historical accuracy. The English used to bet on how fast a terrier could kill a certain number of rats or how many they could get in a certain period of time.
MizPete
The English will bet on pretty much anything.
