Question about MRE ration heaters

Can they be used to heat anything ELSE, besides something in a pouch?

Say for example you have a half a dozen of these ration heaters, but no pouched foods. Could you use one to warm up a can of chili (or something)?

Sure, as long as you put in a pouch first.

So if I was to dump the can of chili into a quart Ziploc freezer bag, would that work?

I knew a guy in college who got a bunch of the heaters without mres. He used them as hand warmers on the deer stand. You have to wrap them up in a thick towel to keep from burning yourself.

But I suppose they can be used to heat anything as long as it's pre cooked and you're not too uptight about how hot it actually gets.

Put them in a box and store them, in anticipation of the coming apocalypse!

Then in 10 years throw them away after moving a couple of times...

With a little understanding of how they actually work the answer is yes you could design a way to heat almost anything.

Just remember they release toxic gasses, so sealed pouches are important. At Annual Training one year we had a soldier place one under some leftovers from the chow hall and cover it will aluminum foil. The chemicals condensed into the food and put him in the hospital.

This I did not know.

I have three different types. One I believe is the GI one. It appears to have four chemical packs, and says to lean it against "a rock or something".

Then we have one that has one large chemical pack, and doesn't say anything about a rock.

The third one looks like the first one, and mentions the rock, but it says that requires salt water to work, and it comes with a little pouch of saltwater.

Strange.
