How many Woodworkers in CAS?

Marshal Flint

Recommended Posts

Alas, I lost a 1200 foot shop in a divorce sale a few years ago.  I still do woodworking, but only on small stuff that I can do in my basement, which prohibits me from doing any type of finishes, due to my wife's extreme allergic reaction to the odors.

This was a project I did for a friend a few years ago.  She wanted a beadboard look, but wanted the grooves to be centered.  I set up a jig and a v-groove bit in my router and did each door separately so the grooves were perfectly aligned with the size of the door.

I don't do much of it. But do like making stuff out of wood.

Worked in a custom cabinet shop when I was in high school.

Wood shop teacher and wood shop was the only thing that kept me in high school.

He got me the job my Sr year. School half a day. Cabinet shop from 12:30-5 every day.

Then off to the roller rink to work from 6-10 on week days.

Told my family that I am to be in a wood casket when the time comes.

My standard line when it comes to woodworking is that I built a birdhouse, the Housing Commission condemned it, and PETA protested me.

I look at the stuff @Yul Lose makes and I just sit and shake my head in wonderment.

Yul... we are waiting to drool over your shop photos... :o

You’re all in for a big letdown, it’s a mess. I’m in the middle of a big clean up, but I’ll see what I can do.

Well, I'll never be in Yul Lose class but I do acquire lots of tools that just seem to sit and mock me!

I know. People see my shop and say “So you are a wood worker.”  I try to be honest, so I have to reply, “no I just buy the tools”

Well you asked for it. By tonight it will be much more organized. One of my shortcomings is that I hate to throw away lumber so I have 1,000’s of pieces of scrap lumber of all sizes so finding a place for it is challenging. Mrs. lose wants me to build a piece of wall art sculpture with some of it, we shall see. Most of my machines I bought from sellers in the classified ads when the Union Tribune used to have want ads, every Thursday morning I’d check the ads out because that was when the new weekend ads came out. The 26” dual drum sander and the 20” planer I bought at an estate sale for $400.00 total. The downdraft sanding table I paid $50.00 for on a classified ad. I built the three router tables. I do so much dovetailing that using one table and switching out cutters for the pins and tails wasn’t really practical.  The Milwaukee panel saw arrived at my local tool store damaged and it sat in their warehouse for a couple of years waiting to get shipped back or junked so I offered them $100.00 and they went for it. I took it to a machinist friend of mine and he charged me another $100.00 to repair it and get it set up, I use it to cut all of my plywood to near finished dimensions before it goes into the main shop. The old Delta radial arm saw is used to cut stock to rough length before it goes into the main shop in more manageable lengths.

Ive got quite a collection of hardwood lumber and hope to use it all someday although when I visit my favorite lumber store more of it usually follows me home. The large bandsaw is what I use for slicing veneer sheets. I’ve got a vacuum press in another part of the shop but a lot of time I’ll cheat and just glue the panels up using plywood platens and shop clamps.

I have another Craftsman radial arm saw set up in the main shop as a dado only machine. There are a few things I build with dados and the blade cuts nice flat bottom dados.

I have a couple of 6”x80” and 88” belt sanders that I use quite a bit, they both have their own dust collector. I’ve got a large four bag collector for my 8” joiner, table saw, and dual drum sander. I have a couple of chop saws that I usually use to cut lumber to final length dimensions and then a couple of table saw sleds for cutoffs if needed. There is a smaller 14” bandsaw and drill press of course. The main shop and the middle room are about 1,600 square feet and then the original shop room that is now the reloading room and a smaller finishing room is about 800 square feet.

Most of the clamps are over in the corner under the TV and sound bar next to a cabinet with hand tools and junk on the right side and then screws, parts, hardware etc.. on the left.

This shop is for working and has turned out soon to be 70 gun carts and hundreds of jewelry and other boxes. You’ll notice all of the jigs and fixtures that I’ve built over the years for gun carts and such hanging on the walls. One of the things that I enjoy most about woodworking is building jigs and fixtures. Some I use pretty often and others every couple of years but it sure is nice to have them when you need them, I tried to count them one time and lost count about 112 when a phone call interrupted me.

Remember, I’m doing a major clean up so don’t judge me to harshly.:D

Standing and working on concrete really bother my back so one day I was in a big lots store in Escondido and they had a pallet of those interlocking rubber floor mats so I bought enough of them to cover the shop floor and reloading room, my back likes it so much better.

Build it with 10ft. ceilings, you’ll be glad you did.

MY GOD YUL, that's not a workshop, that's a factory. Very impressive. Are the shovels outside for burying people who say your workshop is "dirty"?

Yul, you are not a wood worker, you are a wood craftsman, artist and wizard. The magic you produce and invent is second to none. It is obvious that your heart and soul goes into every masterpiece that you create.

Don't have photo of the shop, would have to dig it out of the saw dust, but here a few photos of some projects.

Very, very nice work. I see the Carvewright influence in there on a few pieces.

Absolutely.  A 4'x8' sheet of plywood will turn on any axis with a 10' ceiling.

Please ignore the mess, I;m in the middle of a major re-layout of the shop. It's in my two car garage, to which I am about to add 3 20A circuits  I primarily make wooden toys and decorative pieces for the home.

Tools include a table saw, lathe, bandsaw, drill press, router table, oscillating belt sander, planer, scroll saw, and the usual collection of hand tools. Also about to install the ducting for a 2hp dust collection system. The lathe in this photo has been replaced with a new one from Jet.

I do hope my youngest daughter, her hubby and the toddler move out before I'm too damn old to have a shop again.
She will be done with nursing school + BSN program in summer of 2021.

Back in 1993, we made the terrible mistake of buying a house that was too small.
Now, we are stuck in it.
