Uberti 1866 trigger sticking

Recommended Posts

Hello, new to the game, not new to the guns. My Uberti 1866 yellow boy(new out of the box fired its first 50 today). After cleaning it i noticed the trigger seems to be either sticking or harder to pull. Anyone have these issues? Or know a good amount about these triggers? Anything at all would be helpful. Thanks a million guys

Often, the FULL COCK ledge on the hammer will have a ridge on the front edge, partially trapping the trigger sear.  You can find the ridge by dragging a fingernail on the ledge, back to front.  Stone the ridge OFF.

Most of the recent production Uberti toggle action rifles (of which a 66 is one), have an 8 or 10 pound trigger pull direct from the factory, caused by a too-strong positive angle on the hammer and sear junction (meaning the hammer has to be moved toward the rear pressing against the main spring as the trigger is pulled).  This CAN be stoned down to a 3 or 2 pound pull IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.   Such work sets the interface angles of both the sear (upper trigger) and the hammer full cock notch  to be almost the same, and almost radial to the pivot pin that holds the hammer, so the sear slides off the full cock notch instead of prying back the hammer as the trigger is pulled.

If this is your first cowboy lever rifle, and looking at your number I'd guess it might be, it would be worth finding a cowboy gunsmith locally and have him do an action job (to include setting up the trigger pull and removing rough spots throughout action, perhaps a new main spring and a new lever safety spring).   This will make a ton of difference even if you are not ready to short stroke the action.  And you will then know who to take the gun to for your next set of improvements and tuning.

Good luck, GJ
