Snow-birding and CCW - AZ

Chancy Shot, SASS #67163

Recommended Posts

I will be snow-birding in Phoenix this year in Jan and Feb.  I have a concealed carry permit in Iowa, but I am guessing that does not work in Arizona.  What are the requirements there?  I anticipate having a personal protection weapon in the house I am renting,  Is that a problem?  Its too darn confusing moving around this country :angry:.

Thanks for any advice

See NRA-ILA regarding AZ gun laws.  Carry a loaded firearm with you including in your vehicle when transiting New Mexico - just might be needed.  No permit is needed to have a loaded firearm in your vehicle in NM nor is one required for open carry.

Chancy,

The attached map is from the NRA site.

Looks like NM doesn't recognize your Iowa permit.

The other states you travel through look good.

State Attorney General sites for each state are a good place to brief the carry laws.

Arizona I believe is DPS (Department of Public Safety) https://www.azdps.gov/services/public/cwp

Hope this helps.

USCCA shows that Iowa CCL is valid in AZ with restrictions

From the AZ DPS CONCEALED WEAPONS AND PERMITS Questions / Misc Questions section

<QUOTE>

CAN NON-RESIDENTS BE ISSUED AN ARIZONA PERMIT?

Yes, provided the applicant is a U.S. citizen.

<END QUOTE>

CONCEALED WEAPONS PERMITS (ISSUED BY OTHER STATES OUTSIDE OF ARIZONA)

<QUOTE>

Arizona recognizes all other states valid permits providing the following conditions are met:

Arizona and any political subdivisions of Arizona shall recognize a concealed weapon, firearm or handgun permit or license that is issued by another state or a political subdivision of another state if both:

- The permit or license is recognized as valid in the issuing state

- The permit or license holder is all of the following:

- Legally present in this state

- Not legally prohibited from possessing a firearm in this state

For the purpose of establishing mutual permit or license recognition with other states, the Arizona Department of Public Safety shall enter into a written agreement if another state requires a written agreement.

Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, a person with a concealed weapons permit from another state may not carry a concealed weapon in this state if the person is under twenty-one years of age or is under indictment for, or has been convicted of, a felony offense in any jurisdiction, unless the person's rights have been restored or the conviction is expunged, set-aside or vacated and the applicant is currently not a prohibited possessor under state or federal law.

Traveling all over the U.S. in an RV got me to looking into an easily accessible info source for this very kind if thing.  I found an app called Legal Heat that is very useful.  It's kept up to date, is user friendly and from the web research I did, looks to be one of the more popular and higher rated apps for gun laws.

Disclaimer:  I'm not a lawyer, law maker, law student, nor do I play any of the afore mentioned on TV.  But I found it in the Google Play Store so it must be legit!  Use at your own risk.:P

See ya at Winter Range

This will break your heart; in Arizona you don't NEED a CCW to carry, concealed OR open.

Since that is a state law, doesn't that apply only to AZ residents?

I'm pretty sure that varies by state so a non resident should be certain of that as a legality.

No. Arizona has passed “Permitless Carry.” That means anyone who can legally own/possess a firearm and is 21 or older can carry it concealed without any type of permit/license.

Nothing regarding residency.

Whoa there C.J.Sabre, you are way of course on AZ carry laws.  An AZ resident can carry concealed within the state of AZ without a CWP except where restricted.  Any U.S. citizen can "open carry" in AZ.  Arizona recognizes EVERY Concealed Weapon Permit from ANY state, even left wingnut, liberal, socialist Democrat states like California and Washington.

Just get an AZ CCW. It costs $60 and is easy. They are good for 5 years.

And easy to renew through the mail... And New Mexico recognizes AZ CCW if your driving through NM on way to and from Arizona. That’s why I maintain a AZ CCW because New Mexico doesn’t recognize Minnesota. Same for driving across Texas, they recognize AZ but not my home state of Minnesota.

I am looking at Handgunlaw.us website, and it states  "Arizona has passed “Permitless Carry.” That means anyone who can legally own/possess a firearm and is 21 or older can carry it concealed without any type of permit/license."

There is no mention of residency. If I am wrong, please site your reference.

I don't ever want to give anybody the incorrect information, especially in an instance that could cause them legal trouble.

C.J.Sabre, after much research, I defer to you with humble apology.  You are 100% correct that anyone, who is not what we here in AZ refer to as a "dirtbag", may open or conceal carry within the boundaries of the "Great State of Arizona" without a permit.

Fair Warning!!!  Chancy Shot will come to your AZ CAS clubs and not only show-up for Matches, but will appear for range set-up and work days.  He will attempt to pass himself off as "just an average shooter."  Don't believe him!  And don't make any side bets!:)  (Glad to see you on the Wire, Chancy!  It was a pleasure to shoot with you in Texas.)

I always find it interesting that people come on here and ask "legal" or "Medical" questions rather than going to the actual source! You're risking fines, gun confiscation or jail. On the other hand you're risking a speedy and "correct" recovery or mis-diagnosis.

Sorry, but incorrect.

AZ is Constitutional Carry.

As long as you are not a prohibited person, you may carry open or concealed.

All laws in ARS apply.
