1885 hiwall sight issue.

Hello, I just bought A. Uberti 1885 hiwall in 45/70. I love the gun but I have a issue. I loaded some 405gr lead with 12 gr of trail boss and the gun shoots extremely high. 3 inches at 25 yards 7 inches at 50 and I have no idea at 100 but couldn’t hit a 12 inch plate. Never tried 200 or farther. So is there a better load to get this gun to shoot closer to point of aim? The rear sight is as low as it goes. Is there a taller front sight? I bought this gun to play with at sass side matchs but would like to play with it out to some long ranges.

26 gr. of 5744 an my be a bit more. You have to end up with a load the gun likes, 26 grs. will shoot over 1000 yards.

My (Taylor's) High Wall is a .38-55, but I put a Marble's Tang sight and Lyman target globe on it before I ever shot it.
Much longer sight radius, and I allus liked the peep sight.

The initial velocity of the trail boss 405 bullet is 1000 fps . At 100yds, the drop is 11.99" :o - Use Grits load - to increase the fps ... and leave the sights alone - it's a reload issue

How is increasing the velocity of the round going to solve the above problem????????????????

OK - shoot a 5 shot group at 100yrds with the same reload and we can talk better what the issue is

until then, we are shooting craps

SD,

Increasing the speed of the bullet makes it shoot flatter, so that will bring the bullet POI down. My 45-70 moose load of 45 grs of RL 7 and 400gr Hawk bullet hits the 25yd target dead on when my cowboy load of 27.5 gr of 5744 hits 21/2" high at 25 yds.  Just sayn

The velocity of a 405gr bullet with 12gr of Trail Boss = 971 fps.  Look at the trajectory table at 25 & 50 yds ... big difference than the OP's 3 and 7 inches:

Keep in mind this is an approximation and although it is quite accurate it should

If the sites are modeled around the originals then they are set for around 200 yards. SO yeah it will shoot high. ITs not the powder.

Ike

It's the lack of enough powder,  that's the issue here. ;)

Most long time BPCR competitors use blow tubes to moisten our barrels.

BPCR is an individual sport. For example, I load all of my cartridge cases to the top and compress the poweder about 1/16"..However, I load light 500 grain bullets for the chickens and, for the pigs, turkeys and buffaloes, I use the same 650 grain Postell. ;)

I swear by MVA sights and their extra long shaft. World Class competitor, Dave Gullo of Buffalo Arms,, uses and carries Kelley Sights. I am an "also ran" class shooter. I do a lot of practice so my shooting note book delineates the proper sight settings for each range.as well as for "fun" shoots like in CAS. I note temperature, humidity, sun, etc. :D

You are different, I am different, we are all different so lots of practice at known ranges helps a lot.:)

Higher velocity means less time in the barrelfor the bullet.  Less time in the barrel means the bullet is affected less by recoil.

I believe we are 'preaching to the choir' and the choir doesn't care listening to the music, one week later...
