Preferred SxS for the game today?

I'm rather partial to my CZ Amarillo coach gun.  Double triggers, full set of interchangeable chokes, nice wood with oiled finish, and beautiful color case hardening on the receiver and trigger guard. After some work by Happy Trails, it shucks quick and breaks open cleanly. The fit and finish on this gun is, IMO, better than any other in its price range.

Sadly those are no longer made and very hard to come by!

CZ still offers two external hammer doubles, and I would bet the difference between these and Loophole’s Amarillo model are purely cosmetic.

I've got a regular entry level  Stoeger 12 ga. SxS when I started out back in 2003..

Double trigger and I slicked it up myself.. Disengaged auto safety..

In 2004 my sidekick Lacey Corsette shot it..

Liked it and got rid of her '97 and took my Stoeger..

So..

I bought me a Stoeger Coach gun supreme..

Double trigger.. 12 ga. I put improved cylinder screw in chokes in it..

and again I slicked it up myself..

We've been shooting those Stoegers ever since with no problems..

I did get some popping open on my Supreme when I lightened the lever

spring too much so I put the stock one back in.. Problem gone..

I also replaced the firing pins in both maybe 3-4 years ago even tho

I was having no missfires..

If I was in your position..

On a budget.. Stoeger  Coach Gun Supreme 12ga. SxS double trigger..

slicked by a good cowboy smith..

Gots $$'s.. SKB from Johnny Meadows..

Rance ;)

Thinkin' that's my 2 cents

I've been using a Stoeger Coach gun Supreme for 8 years now without issue. I did the Pettifogger mods myself  back when I first got it and after some shoulder surgery had the throats lengthened and honed and it's worked flawlessly. For the price I don't think you can go wrong. You can buy a couple for the price of a used SKB. JMHO

There are a bunch of different SXS on the market. One could safely say, there is a model to fit every budget.
I shoot a SKB and I shot. Stoeger for many years. The SKB is a very nice shotgun lighter than the Stoeger has a more nimble feel to it. The Stoeger handles very well and mine has held very well.
I would say if the SKB is out of your price range get a Stoeger and have it slicked up.

Rooster,

Do you have the Supreme or regular coach gun?

Thanks!

Regular two triggers Coach gun.

Replaced firing pins and slight honing and funneling.

Zero issues for 10 years now.

Ok,  with the Stoeger should I just get the regular Stoeger coach or the coach gun supreme?  Single or double trigger?

The Supreme offers interchangeable chokes,  more attractive wood and a recoil pad.

My Supreme is the double trigger for reliability, and the interchangeable chokes.
I bought a set of Cylinder chokes for our short target distances.
I'm replacing the Supreme butt pad with a Kick-EEZ grind-to-fit.
I bought a set of stainless firing pins and the required wrench.

I want to clip the impeller to disable the automatic safety device, but this particular part is forever sold-out at Midwestgunworks.
I like to have a spare on hand if I'm going to modify that part.

I just got off the phone with Johnny Meadows and I think I am going to be all set!

What a great guy!

Remember to post pictures upon recieving said shotgun.

No pics, never happened :D

Well sadly, I cannot afford an skb so at Johnny’s recommendation I am getting a Baikal with 20" barrels, beveled and polished chambers, full action job including making it open further for ease of loading and unloading.  Included is the Stock cut to fit me with a kickezz butt pad.

Would you share the particulars of how the stock was cut to fit for you?

I can't tell if the butt pad cut is a negative angle... or how much was shortened, etc.
I need to do this with my Stoeger, still doing the research, so I cut once and don't cry after..

Johnny asked some basic measurements questions and then he cuts it and puts the pad on it.

The Baikal is a great gun too .

Only Down fall is they was made in Russia and getting parts is questionable.

I have a Baikal Hammered Coach gun,

That I also love and shoot with My Henry 1860 and My Open Top Colt 51's .

Enjoy!

I dug around a bit and found yours as the SPR220 #89548 in the Remington 2008 catalog.
Importing from Baikal by Remington was 2005 thru 2008.

It comes as Cyl/Cyl chokes, 20", double trigger, 2-3/4" chambers.
Ideal for cowboy stuff...

I’m new and just got my first match under my belt a few weeks ago so I don’t know squat but for a shotgun I always had a hankering for a hammered double. Steve Young supplied me with a blued TNN with reversed triggers and I absolutely love the thing. It falls open, loads and empties without a fuss and the hammers cock easily with one thumb. It was the only gun that I didn’t have a chance to fire prior to the match but it was dead on and a pleasure to shoot.

When I buy another shotgun it will be probably be another hammered double.

I have a brand new Stoeger that just up and died after 12 shells.
The pivot hinge broke.

I have an RMA started, but no reply due to the Christmas holiday.

A bit of Google and apparently this is not a completely rare or isolated breakage.
This is disheartening, to say the least.

If Stoeger replaces the gun with a new one, I will have to pay more FFL feels because of the new serial number.
I don't know if a new barrel can be fitted to the existing receiver.
