Oh Yeah - Rossi 92 Action Job (Steve's Gunz)

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a Rossi 92 in .45 Colt for Wild Bunch and CAS, and it was decent out of the box or so I thought.  I contacted Steve (Nate Kiowa Jones) and he was booked for 6 months, so I took the plunge and bought the DVD and just completed the action job with modified springs and follower, and modifying the parts as instructed, and man oh man, this thing is slicker than snot on a door knob.  Instead of dummy rounds banking off the ceiling when ejected they now just flip gently over my shoulder.  No more hang ups and rough spots.  I just wanted to give a shout out to Steve, he is good people!!!

Happy shooting :)

I have been a Long Time 92 Man.

And a Steve fan .

I talk to Steve on a regular basis.

He is a Very Helpful and Friendly Businessman.

I have slicked many 92's that 90% of the shooters in this game cant out run .

But that 10% who can really out run a 92   , Set the standard and speed of the game .

Unfortunately the have convinced the large mass that a 92 is now no good for the game .

I always hear you dont see a 92 in the top ten or any champions shooting a 92 .

Well  they are right,  You dont see the 92 in the top ten any more .

But there sure is the rest of us in the 90% who  still cant out run a 92 ! LOL

Congratulations on your first 92 Love .

There will never be another first .

Love it , Cherish it ,  and dont ever  Stick yourself,  With the wish that you still had it .

I still got my first , Oh and My Second  92 lol

God bless.

Same here, Kiowa took my calls chat few times super friendly guy.

Got from him the DVD and few parts to diy.

In my inexperienced opinion the 92 was not popular for the lack of supply one and secondly when they appeared were hit and miss on the reliability department.

He said very clear to me it can be run like the tops.

Congrats on your new rifle

I had my 92 done by Nate after my first year of Cowboy action shooting. About 2000. I must have got him at the right time because it was only about 6 weeks gone. I had him do the action job and the sights. I was feeling the pain in my hand after each shoot before and after his work I could run it with 2 fingers on the lever side. When I got it back the hammer drop was so light I didn't think it would set off a primer so I put a primed case in the rifle and popped it in the basement.  I didn't think of the do it yourself option but I probably would do it that way now.

I have slicked up seven 92s ( 4 for myself and 3 for friends) using NKJ's video and parts. All now run flawlessly.  Talked to him over the phone about unique problems and he has always provided a wealth of knowledge.

I let a Cowboy friend try the action and he said:   "A Stiff Breeze Could Cock This Thing"  :)

Now I just got to figure out which reloads are going to run the smoothest in this thing!

While each 92 is unique, all of the ones I have set up like 125 grain LTC bullets in 38 special cases seated out to an OAL of 1.51. They will also shoot 158 grain LRNFP seated to the same OAL.

Nate Kiowa Jones is the Rossi Specialist, that's why he has a 6 month backlog of work ...   But if you send him an email with a logical explained issue ... HE WILL RESPOND BACK TO YOU

He's an excellent all-around gunsmith.  A few years ago, I sent him an original Winchester '73 to bring back to life.  Excellent work!

This one is in .45 Colt :)

Right now, I'm using a 200 gr RNFP from Outlaw Bullets (outlawbullets.com), seated at the crimp groove and it runs fine.

Keep that magazine tube clean and lubed, they like ta rust.

Buy some good quality car wax and give the inside of your magazine tube a first class wax job.  I cleaned mine really well; then applied the wax using a bore mop. Attached the bore mop to a cleaning rod chucked into my cordless drill. When I was done the inside of the tuble looked like mirrored glass and I have had ZERO issues with rusting.

I put in SS Springs and I spray with Balastal down the tube .

Never had a rust issue .

I think it was something that started before I put in the SS spring and creeps back if I don't scrub it out after each use.

Have tried a couple things... The Trail Boss blow-by probably doesn't help either.

When I had one, I used 200 grain RNFPs and Trail Boss at mid range. Then I switched to 250 gr RNFP and TB which kept blow by to a minimum. The difference in recoil was inconsequential to me. You could even use a 180 RNFP.

Anyway, I found those bullet profiles and weight fed flawlessly.

The south american model 92s were indeed "hit or miss" for quite a while. In the last few years I bought a couple of the Miroku Winchester Model 92s and they are superb and lend themselves favorably to be "breathed on".....

Problem is, they cost as much or more than a Ubertiu 73/66......And the Uberti has much better aftermarket support and are much easier to make Go Fast.

But I'm loving the 92!  I even converted a Rossi to takedown....... http://rvbprecision.com/shooting/rossi-1892-winchester-take-down-conversion.html

That takedown is a slick conversion!  Well Done!
