Subdeacon Joe
Someone put out some packaged snacks at work. From China. One package looked like it had pork jerky in it. Another I couldn't even come close to identifying. Maybe cured liver. Two had English on the labels. One was Coconut Cookies. The other was a whole spatchcocked seasoned, smoked, dried duck. A little spicier than I care for, and a bit greasy on the outside, but not bad. Wouldn't go out of my way to buy it, but if offered I'd take a little. Tried the cookies. Coconut flavored sawdust. DRY coconut flavored sawdust.
Pat Riot
What, no jar with a fermented snake in it?
Tom Bullweed
I have a photo from the Shanghai airport of a bag of duck tongue snacks and a photo of dried croakers. I hoped to not be stuck for 14 hours on a plane next to someone eating either.
Linn Keller, SASS 27332, BOLD 103
"Tried the cookies. Coconut flavored sawdust. DRY coconut flavored sawdust." African food labels are printed for the illiterate masses and also with the knowledge that there are so very many languages on said continent. The labels generally have a picture of the contents. Gerber couldn't imagine why its baby food wasn't selling. Uuummmmmmm ....
St. Louis Suomi SASS #31905
I like squid chips or preserved plums (Chung pe moi) or preserved olive. Shredded squid is quite good. Chinese snacks are nutritious - more or less. (but not for the folks who are gastronomically challenged) :-) STL Suomi
