Needing to make the switch from FCD to FC

Recommended Posts

Been doing a bunch of thinking on this.  I started shooting smoky from the beginning  in 2006 and started shooting duelist in 2007 since

it was the way they did it in the old west.    I don't remember seeing any pictures showing it but I suspect them old pards

that got a touch of the rheumatism probably started shooting two handed it they wanted to hit the target before the sunsets.

Arthritis has made shooting duelist slower and by the 5th or 6th stage a bit painful.  Doc says it isn't too bad yet but its not going to get better.  I tried lower

hammers on the capguns but the thumb still gets to hurting by the end of a match.  Hand exercises help hand strength but don't do anything for the thumb arthritis.

Any other pards here had to make the switch?  I suspect so.

And I aint changing to heathen smokeless.

Well, I was faced with the same situation a couple of years ago, very arthritic hands and wrists and Mrs. Lose did a little research and started me on this stuff. For the first couple of months I took two in the morning and two at night and now I just take one first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and my arthritis has virtually disappeared. You might give it a try and maybe you won’t have to give up duelist

Yo-Ho-De-O;  Don't feel like the Lone Ranger Coco cause besides COPD I get ailments also in my hands and my right thumb never has healed right. That's why I can't shoot duelist. I guess they  all call it senior moments.

God Bless my friend.

Count me in.

I still enjoy Frontiersman when I feel non-competitive at a monthly match.  But it hurts.  Since earning my Cattle Baron certification, I shoot smokeless two-handed, or black powder in Frontier Cartridge in matches where I want a plaque.  Two-handed Cattle Baron and Frontier Cartridge hurt too, but they hurt faster!  :)

My wife takes these.

Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin & MSM Complex Extra Strength Triple-Threat Joint Supplement, 4700mg per serving, Supports Relief of Joint Pain, Aches & Stiffness, Moneyback Guarantee

Note that it contains the sulphate versions of glucosamine and chondroitin and not the hydrochloride versions. My research shows that the sulphate versions are significantly more effective than the hydrochloride versions.

YMMV

I have Uncle Arthur in my hands also, I take an Aleve on the morning of the shoot and usually gets me to the end. If I couldn't shoot duelist anymore I wouldn't quit shooting I would go.......gulp.....double gripper just to keep going!

Aurthur came to live in my right thumb.  Double grip ain't pretty but it will let some of us old farts continue to create havoc.

i hear that - yes the arthritis has always caused me to double grip - ive had it in the lower thumb joints since my 50s , doctor said "get used to it , your aging , it will get worse" , it has , but im not going to stop till i cant thumb it back anymore , changing catagory is not the end of the world - your still shooting , thats what counts ,

I had to switch to double-grip after an old thumb injury gave me a real hitch in my cocking.   It's a blow to the ego at first, but two handed shooting is better than not shooting.  It does takes awhile to stop trying to cock the hammer with your dominant hand.

Sedalia, I am taking the sulfate version.  Sometimes the magic works sometimes it don't.

Jamming my right hand thumb and fingers playing ball as a kid probably did not help.

Pards, Any kind a shooting is better than no shooting.  Yeehaw

Coconino, I have been fighting RA for decades and can totally identify with your problem. You have the best RA doc I have ever worked with right there in there in Flagstaff - Dr. Hu. Get in to see him and get a professional opinion. In my experience it is far better to hammer the disease hard from the get go then mess around with home remedies and over the counter stuff.

Charlie,

My GP says it isn't too bad to have him recommend a specialist yet.  I will talk to him about it.

Thanks for the comments pards.  I will give FC a spin and see how it goes for now.  Old habits mean that I will probably

brain fart and shoot duelist from time to time anyway.

Dang, Yul, that looks interesting.  My arthritis is bone on bone in my left knee, I may have to give that a try!  Thanks!

It may or may not work for what you’re describing. Back when I first started using it after a match or working with my hands a lot in the shop or reloading my thumbs and wrists were killing me. Since I’ve been using ArthroMax my hands and wrists no longer bother me. Loading a 1,000 rounds in a sitting is actually enjoyable now, not so back then.

Google Life Extension and you’ll see their site. Many times my wife finds it on amazon much cheaper than Life Extension.

I can take one Aleve and it lasts till the end of the shoot. Advil I have to take a couple. I'd buy some if this gives long lasting relief. Where do you get it at??

See my post above. I haven’t taken an Aleve or Advil in years for arthritis, no need.

I wanted to switch to gunfighter, but even with the lower hammer spur on the SASS Vaquero's my left thumb was hurting real bad by the 4th or 5th stage. I'm going try that ArthroMax, Thanks Yul!

Yul, you may have started an run on this.  I'm trying it out too.

For some immediate relief, ya'll might want to try this:

Soak a gauze pad in caster oil.  Place it on the affected area and wrap it in plastic wrap.  Put heat on it for about 90 minutes than keep it on overnight.  Clean it off in the morning.  Works for me.  I'll sometimes use it before a shoot to prevent/delay the irritation.  Active ingredient is ricin, but at very low levels so it is not poisonous.  A cheap temporary fix, but can get messy.  I use it when the discomfort is there or I anticipate doing something to aggravate it, like shooting frontiersman.

You pards have to realize that a heavy dosage at the beginning is key to ArthroMax helping you. After that all it takes is one in the morning.

Celebrex (celecoxib) works but is hard on the kidneys. On pill before  match is, IMHO, acceptable.

Yul, how long did you take the heavy dosage?

Ah, for a few months.  Reread your first post.
