That's why I either use a piston fill or converter.

I’m old enough to remember fountain pens that had an internal bladder. There was a lever on the outside of the pen that when lifted would squeeze the bladder. On release,  the bladder would expand and draw ink from a bottle in through the nib. 
 

As a tyke, I thought that was cool. What I didn’t understand is that if you lifted the lever again, you’d squirt ink everywhere. Dad was NOT pleased… 😱

I knew that lifting the lever would squirt ink - having seen that done in various slapstick comedies over the years - but I did not know why until your description of how the pen worked just now.
