I have shot half a dozen in the 17 odd years we have owned the property.  Some years a couple some years none.  The old Rhodesian is the biter - neither of the others have, though one in particular has had much greater opportunity.  I would most likely shoot them anyway because of tree damage.

Here 'tis... "Naval Truck Gun~!"  ^_^

Ninth grade.  Got graded an "A" for it, as I recall.  I drilled the bore so pulled .22 lead bullets would fit nicely....

Yes, they’re out there.

Reminds me of an episode of The Andy Griffith show. Goober was real upset cuz he has sold somebody new tires. And he didn't need new tires. The threads was just starting to show. "And you know Andy, you can get about 300 more miles on the threads."

I remember that quote. "Everyone knows the cord is good for 300 miles."

That's not only funny, but it's believable. But ---

They have the colors in the wrong order. The purple should be above the red, or put it at the other end and it's below the blue. Purple is a mixture of red and blue. The way that is set up it is showing purple to be a mixture of yellow and red.

I don't remember this in-depth analysis the last six times that was posted.

Never seen a porcupine for real, myself. But as I understand from my reading ---

First, they are very lightly attached to the porcupine. They come off easily.

Second, they are barbed, so when they hit something they go in and they don't want to come back out, so they pull off the porcupine and just stay in whatever they hit.

And third, and the best part, is they are hollow. So whenever you try to remove one - whether you just grabbing it in your hands and pulling or whether you get hold of it with a pair of pliers - when you squeeze the spine the air inside compresses and it makes the point bigger. So when you try to pull it out it is now not only barbed so it doesn't want to come out, but it's bigger than when it went in.

I can understand why the dog didn't like it.

What you do is cut the end of the quill off to release the air inside. It then becomes a little easier to pull out and not "inflate" from the pressure of the pliers you use to pull them from the ()(**& % stupid Brittany Spaniel that attacked a dead porcupine and shook it to ensure the quills got the face, mouth, ears and the back of the head and neck.

Twice.

I've had two Brits.  On balance, wonderful dogs.  My first, a liver Brit named Woody, was as close to brilliant as a dog could be - he was holding picture perfect points on pheasants at nine months.  And finding deer for me in his early teens ~ on three legs.  He had four, but the right foreleg was all but useless as a result of an accident; he'd wear a supporting sling in the field or when jogging with me. He was my constant companion for over sixteen years, 1976 - 1992.  (And  he absolutely despised rattlesnakes!)

Sandie, the second, was as sweet as could be and dumber'n a bag o' briquettes.  "How dumb was she?"  Well... she was so dumb she'd lie on the floor gnawing on a chew toy, then break wind, let out a startled "Yipe!" and jump up and whirl around to bark at whatever invisible antagonist had goosed 'er.    😄

My beagle mix thought that since the porky didn't run away that it wanted to play! Spent an hour pulling quills from her back.

I don't shoot them much. We just make them uncomfortable. A couple drinks helps. Takes the caution away.
