    2013

At Mule Camp, on Friday night, they had a dinner for contestants. Barbecue as far back as I can recall. So I'm sitting there one night, scarfing down the plate of pulled pork, some large slices of garlic bread, and a bowl of Brunswick stew. This was an all-you-can-eat dinner. So I finished everything on my plate and tipped the bowl up to drain the last of the liquid.

Then I went up and got a refill. When I came back and sat down the guy on the other side of the table pointed to the bowl and asked what it was. I said, "where you from?" He said he was from Ohio. Okay. And I told him it was Brunswick stew. He said he saw that on the menu board. But what was Brunswick stew?

I told him it was meat and maters and baby lima beans. Some people put potatoes in it but these people didn't and I considered that a good thing because potatoes don't belong in Brunswick stew. And he tried some. By then I had emptied my second bowl and was contemplating making a third trip.

He asked what kind of meat it was. I waited till I saw he had a mouthful, and then I told him it was squirrel.

He hesitated a moment, then continued chewing and swallowed. Said he had never had squirrel before, but that was pretty good. Then he went up and got a second helping.

And I'm sitting there trying to decide whether I should tell him that it was chicken, or leave him to believe it was squirrel.

Note that he doesn't say he catches them.  Lots of chutzpah thinking he can run one down.

After drinking a couple of Dos Equis and chasing whitetail...probably wouldn't be able to do much by the time he caught one.

They’re easier to run down with a 30/06

Yesterday I'm going to the grocery store. The road is under construction, and is 35 mph.

Two cars behind me is either a black or an extremely dark blue SUV with a white roof. Looked like a cop car to me. And I made real certain that I was doing 35.

Then we get to the end of the construction and the one lane of traffic becomes three lanes and the speed limit goes up to 45. And the guy behind me passes me like I'm standing still and then here comes that SUV. Also passes me like I'm standing still and waves the Hawaiian peace sign at me.

And I'm sitting there thinking, "Friend, if you wish to drive in excess of the posted speed limit, I suggest that next time you buy a new car do not get one that is painted like a cop car. If you look like a black and white, people in front of you are not going to speed".

Several years ago, I had the "pleasure" of being pulled over for a Commercial Vehicle Roadside Check by an Arizona DOT Officer in a pickup truck. A plain white pickup truck. With a plain white shell on the bed. AND A LADDER RACK ON TOP!!

After that I was always able to spot him, but I'd never seen anything like that before.

Couple decades ago in Connecticut, State PD was using drug bust vehicles etc. You might see anything from an old nasty pickup to a Grand National or a Corvette, several nice Camaros.

This isn't from Florida, but I have seen a local motorcycle that from a distance looks like a moderately-modified chopper, but up close you can see the lights and gear.

Watch out for unmarked cop bikes - webBikeWorld

That doesn't look like a "chopper" to me!

Me either. .

I said it wasn’t the one I was talking about (in Florida). It’s just a pic of a low-profile police m/c that doesn’t look like a LEO vehicle without closer scrutiny.

I got pulled over by a CT State trooper driving one of those Grand Nationals and it had Massachusetts plates.

That's really sneaky! I almost got caught by the old pick- up going thru Vernon! Something just looked odd from a distance and I slowed down.! He was just east of Vernon Circle but parked on the grass at about a 45° angle!

That's the kind of thing that could get someone (maybe me) in big trouble.  If I were in CT, and a plain jane car with Mass. plates was flashing lights and trying to pull me over, I don't think I'd stop.  I'd think it was some low life pretending to be a cop with bad intentions in mind.  If some marked units with uniformed cops didn't show up things could get ugly.

Meanwhile, I'd be on 911 reporting a possible attempted carjacking.

Not something I thought about at the time and this was pre cell phone..  The CT State trooper driving was in full uniform.
