Calibrated. One was absolutely correct reading outside measurement. They are measured by volume in board feet. A special ruler is used where you measured the diameter and look on a list of numbers associated with length. The number will be the volume of lumber expected out of that log.  We had a logger bring in a load for the first time. Mary measured them. He ranted that the total was short. Mary invited him to mesure them. He did and came up with about 10% more volume.  The measuring device was Lifkin folding stick rulers like old time carpenter's used but adapted for log measuring.  Mary compared her ruler with his. The third section of his ruler skipped an inch. Thus a 14" log would read 15" and so on. The ruler hadn't been altered. It had been made wrong. His wife was along and agreed. But he was still insisting he was right.
